Today all at once my favourite moisturiser, sunscreen and foundation all ran out, and as such I found myself snipping open various tubes of lotions and potions, swearing that beauty brands are in this together. They aren't, and of course my three most used products will disappear the quickest but that doesn't make the sting of replacing a selection of skincare items any easier. Goodbye money, it was nice knowing you. I then got to thinking, why is it that I deplete foundation, SPF and general skincare items several times a year, and yet I have a nail polish from what I am guessing is 2009 that is still going strong (I'm exaggerating of course).
Nail polish, I like you but only in small doses; some days or even weeks I enjoy a glossy manicure and then suddenly I have this urge for bare nails. I secretly think it is the upkeep, I enjoy painted nails but feel really unkempt when then begin to chip, even self concious to a degree. Then I'll go through phases of visiting nail salons for gel overlays but again the upkeep is too much - gel overlays are wonderful, they allow your natural nails to grow underneath, on the most part are inexpensive and really hard-wearing. However you can't remove them at home all that easily and a few weeks down the line, they do look a little tatty. Basically I am not a nail polish kinda gal and that explains why I have half used, to semi-full bottles of various nail paints scattered freely around my home. Go figure.
Yes I am a fairly careless person and have lost more pairs of sunglasses, sets of keys and bankcards than I care to admit - if it is an item that I have to use regularly, at some point I will loose it, accept it and move on Mum. This will explain my collection of half used lip balms; I buy a lip balm, use it a few times, loose it, replace it and then repeat the whole process a good few times per month. The problem is I eventually find said lost lip product and as such now have a drawer full of perfectly-good-yet-half-finished lip moisturisers. Tell me I'm not the only one?
Speaking of half finished products has anyone ever completed or hit pan on every single shade within a ready made eyeshadow palette? I know I haven't - my favourite shades of course crumble away quickly, I am then left with the remnants of bright and slightly unusual eyeshadows, that I know I'll never use. This is the reason why I am more tempted to purchase solo pans of eyeshadow over an eyeshadow palette - I say that with such conviction, when I have an assortment of lightly used palettes currently judging me for pretending to be above it all.
Then there is the products that I don't get to finish up through no fault of my own; be it a dried up mascara that is potentially a danger to my eye health, or all the broken compacts of pressed powder I have shattered over the years. Turns out it is easier to loose, break or disregard a beauty item than finish up every mere morsel of product.
What items currently nestling in your beauty stash never quite hit empty?
I almost never finish lip products or entire eyeshadow palettes!

I agree with all these. I also never seems to get through face powders, specifically blush and bronzer. I do fine with setting powders.

I tend to go through lip products quite quickly hahaha.

Great post! You're definitely not alone - I swear there must be lipbalms, hair bobbles, tweezers, earring backs and kirby grips lurking in all corners of the house...
ReplyDeleteI felt the same about palettes so I bought one of the Urban Decay DIY palettes to put solo eyeshadows in and only let myself buy a solo eyeshadow once I've completely used up the colour in a palette. I've filled three of the four slots now and it works really well. I don't think I'll ever stop buying palettes completely though - I do think they encourage you to try different colours/combos...plus the packaging is irresistible!
Lipbalms and Mascara, I always end buying new ones anyway and the others get lost in the depths of my make-up bag! x

I have the same thing with nail polishes ... it's worst when you start to see them separate (ew)! i'm a sucker for clinging on to makeup that I 'might use one day' but that day never comes haha

I ran out of my Kate Somerville Goat Milk moisturizer and I was devastated! I only had it for like 4 months and I went through it so quickly. It's a bummer to because you can't tell when you're about out with the way it's packaged. I also hit pan on my NARS Laguna bronzer within 6 months of having it and I know people who haven't even hit pan after a year and a half of use. Like what am I doing hahaha

ReplyDeleteI have far too many lip products that I will never use up, but I could never bring myself to throw away either!
ReplyDeleteI defiantly have this problem, things seems to take forever to empty like nail varnish. I run out of moisturiser and foundation like no tomorrow. xx

The only products I do use up are my everyday foundations and concealers! It's hard to use up anything you have a large collection of, especially eyeshadow palettes! :)

I swear Nail Varnish lasts FOREVER, even my top coat is still practically full, and I use it everytime. Eyeshadow palettes give my OCD a headache. I LOVE my MAC, I swear the fact you can change pans is worth the huge pricetag haha. Like what do I do with my UD naked palette once half baked is gone? do I keep it? do I bin it? URGH! It's my aim to finish a lipstick this year though, I will do it! As for lipbalm I am exactly the same. I also like to wash them for some reason, have had to bin so many because I have ended up putting them in the machine and they come out smelling like comfort. Blech! My other half actually finishes them - what a weirdo. lol.

I have a MAC bronzer from 2012 that hasn't hit ear pan, nor my NAKED 1 palette - I love makeup but never finish it!

I don't think I've ever actually finished a mascara - I just end up chucking them because I've had them too long! In fact I really seem to struggle to finish makeup products in general except primer, foundation, concealer and powder...

I have never used up a nail varnish - they end up going off and getting thrown away! Takes me forever to use up lip balm too xx

For me it's bronzer and blush. I had a bronzer by Lancaster for 4 years (it was quite big) and I never hit pan...for hygiene reasons I threw it away. same thing with blushes and that's why I don't want to own too many!
