Laura Mercier Dark Spell Collection Eyeshadows

I must say it feels a little bizarre soaking up the last rays of a fine summer evening and typing up a post about eyeshadows from a fall collection. Not that I am complaining a little Vitamin D is good for you and a new make-up collection is good for the soul ha! If you like deep, sultry make-up you are sure in for a treat with Laura Mericer's Autumn/Fall Collection - Dark Spell, it is the perfect collection for a night out on the tiles!

Please don't judge me but when I pay close to a premium price I expect sturdy and dare I say it pretty packaging -  not in this instance as the products are samples but I'm sure you understand what I mean. All the mono eyeshadows within the Dark Spell collection wouldn't look out of place within a budget brand stand thanks to their flimsy and cheap looking casing. I do worry that they wouldn't survive a drop or a bump particularly the baked versions.

It is not all doom and gloom as the two shades I have been gifted are great vampy shades that can easily create a smoky, dramatic eye look with little else. The Dark Spell collection contains two eyeshadows both of which are black but yield a very different result so it is not a case of having two of the same shade.

Laura Mercier Dark Spirit - This is the matte black from the collective, it is super soft to the touch and oddly moist, well as moist as a powder can be. Unlike some baked products this is not at all dry and free from product fall out, more importantly it simply glides on to the skin with full on pigmentation which of course can be buffered down to a softer effect. As this is a true black hue with no blue or grey leanings it is ideal for all skin tones and can double up as an eye liner particularly if you dampen the product first. A great all round matte black that is very close to perfection. With a primer in the currently warm weather this shade wore for close to 8 hours as an all over wash of colour on my oil lids but surprisingly less when as an eyeliner - around 6 hours.

Laura Mercier Mystical - If like myself you enjoy a smoky eye every now and then but like it to be quick and easy this is the shade for you. Unlike Dark Spirit this is a typical baked style product and as a result this is slightly drier in texture and can yield substantial product fall out. However that can be forgiven as this is a truly divine shade - an almost black charcoal grey that contains teeny tiny flecks of silver glitter that add a subtle sheen and dimension to the overall effect. Unlike the above shade this does run slightly blue and cool in tone as a result so it may not be for everyone but if you have blue eyes trust me you want this in your arsenal as it really allows them to pop! This is one of those shades that can quickly create an effect and impressive smoky eye when blended all over the lid.  In terms of wear this wore under the same circumstances as above for around 7 hours, I did not test it as an eyeliner in this case.

At the moment both of the Laura Mercier Dark Spell eyeshadows are exclusive to Selfridges
