A Note on Essential Oils

As the above photo dictates, I have an ever so slight weakness in regards to essential oils and shamelessly so too - there is very little you can't do (well sensory at least) with essential oils and as such I do think they have a place in every home.

A Note on Essential Oils

Have you ever wondered just exactly what an essential oil is? Well wonder no more, an essential oil is the liquid extracted from leaves, flowers, roots and other aspects of a plant. As such essential oils contain the essence of the plant it was distilled from and are completely natural (well in the most part at least), not to mention as they are highly concentrated a little goes a long way.

When it comes to purchasing your own essential oils you have two choices: ready made blends or individual oils; typically I purchase stand-alone oils as they offer more freedom, I can use them as a solo product or if I wish I can blend them with other oils and create my own custom blend. I do however understand that building up a collection of essential oils takes both time and money, sometimes a ready-to-go essential oil fusion will be the best way to go - especially great if you have no idea where to start or what oils work best together. The downside of pre-blended oils is that you have no control over the end result, and may find the end fragrance underwhelming or worse overwhelming. I do however swear by Neal's Yard Essential Oil Blends - from sleep issues, travel sickness, the common cold and other general aliments, they have the perfect and utterly affordable blend for you.

Regular readers of this site will know that I am lead by my nose - I am that weirdo who won't just compliment you on your choose fragrance but also all but demand to know what said scent is. I truly apologise in advance. As such it will come as little a surprise that I do use my essential oils to scent my house - I place a few droplets into an oil burner and allow the natural aromas to uplift, cleanse and/or re-charge my batteries. Bliss. However being a natural product you can also use essential oils on the skin: be it a few drops added to a warm bath, used with almond or any other carrier oil to create a massage ready product, used with coconut oil to create a cleanser or body moisturiser - the list truly goes on.

A Note on Essential Oils

Typically I blend and burn a little peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil to help de-congest during the colder months, straight-laced lemon on it's own after someone has cooked fish and a splash of lavender and chamomile to help unwind in the evening. If I am especially suffering from a bout of restlessness, I do sprinkle a little lavender onto a tissue and pop it under my tissue. My reliance on essential oils doesn't quite end there, I dab spearmint and ginger essential oils on my pulse points to curb motion sickness and have been known to add a little tea tree oil to my shampoo to deeply cleanse and heal my scalp - again the list goes on and a quick Google search will produce more ideas.

There is space and date I say need for essential oils in everyone's collection but I must warn once you begin experimenting and creating your own blends, you will quickly become hooked.

Do you use essential oils, if so what are your go to options and why?
