I am obsessed not only with eye care products but also my under eye area, as such I can't begin to tell you how frequently I research both topics. It seems I'm not alone, apparently the term eye cream is one of the most searched for beauty buzz words, however we don't all share similar views on under eye nourishment; some camps don't believe it to be a necessary step and others swear by it as a stand alone product. As such I have often found myself typing in the term "Do I really need an eye cream?" into the Google search bar - I mean what if this whole time I have been wasting time, effort and money?
The biggest argument is that not every eye cream has actually been formulated for the delicate eye area - misleading to say the least. In some and I must stress some instances, it is a case of a typical facial moisturiser in a smaller tube. The way around this of course is to compare ingredients and see if it stands up to expectations. Typically I expect my eye cream to contain Peptides as well as Vitamin C, E and antioxidants- all great for anti-ageing purposes and in some instances known to brighten and protect the skin. I do also look for a shot of caffeine and as always SPF if it is a day time product.
Do I look for such ingredients in a facial moisturiser? Honestly not so much, I tend to gravitate towards Hyaluronic Acid and textures aimed at oily complexions; sure there is a thought process but it is not as laboured when compared to the research I do before purchasing an eye cream. Why? Well as we all know the skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate, I was lead to believe not fully able to tolerate a typical moisturiser. The more I think about this, the less convinced I am it is true - I mean we don't have use a separate foundation formulation nor SPF for the under eye area so typically speaking yes, you could use any moisturiser on the whole face free from consequences.
However a sub-par moisturiser, regardless if it is for the eye area or not is just that and when applied to a thinner area of the face it may not be absorbed properly and as such offer next to no benefits. Like it or not, good eye creams actually do serve a purpose, they are not only richer in ingredients but with a lighter, easier to absorb texture. Yes a facial moisturise is safe to use on the eye area but heavier textures may lead to fluid retention - yep puffiness, despite your best intentions.
In my opinion and let's face it, I'm no expert, a good eye cream is an important part of the skincare puzzle and something I wouldn't be without. Yes there are plenty of under-performing eye creams out there giving such product branch a bad name but a great, anti-ageing, peptide rich formula is hard to beat, as such I do feel very few standard facial moisturisers can take their place. Personally I recommend CeraVe Eye Repair Cream - a great, all age and purpose eye cream, and Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream - the ideal option for day wear (be sure to team it with an SPF) and to brighten the eye area.
What are your thoughts? Are you a huge advocate of eye cream or is it something you skip? I'd love to hear all sides of this argument.
I use a separate eye cream, but that's only because I've been told to and not because I necessarily believe in it. If that makes sense. I actually think a good moisturizing face cream is fine for the eyes. Yes, there are some face creams that are a bit too strong for the eye area like something that would contain tea tree oil, but apart from that, I really don't think you need a separate eye cream. Maybe I'm wrong?
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've tried hundreds of different eye creams and none of them seem to make a difference. I definitely wouldn't give up on my search though. I will be sure to check out the ingredients now and look for the ones you suggested. Thanks x

Being a little 'older' I always use eye cream, and whilst there are some tell tale lines I don't think they're 'as bad' as could be so I think whatever I'm doing is working!!

I constantly think this! Is it worth spending all that money on something that won't really make a difference. Never know whether to believe advertising or not.
ReplyDeleteI do think you're right though - if you get a good quality one it must make some difference. Have got the Clinique one on my list so far...

I have this persisting problem of dark circles. I feel, now, they can be rectified. Also, <a href="http://www.bodytobodymassagedelhi.com>body to body massage parlour in Delhi</a> suggests this.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of them but I don't know if a lot of them work like you say. I try to use one if I remember! x

I've just started using the L'Oreal Revitalift under my eyes because I want them to be less lined and hopefully not as dark (but I might need more sleep!).

I always use eye cream just to ensure it stays super hydrated! I've started using the pep-start by Clinique and so far so good! Just wrote a post about it over on my blog as well! Great read.

I'm so torn! I'm constantly seeing people saying they are religious with their eye cream and others saying it does absolutely nothing!

I'm determined not to get crows feet when I am old so I use it every day.

I've never ever used any sort of eye cream but quite recently, I've been so tempted to give it a go, anything to help these dark circles haha!

I definitely notice a difference when I don't use eye cream!

I used to ask myself the same question until reading Sali Hughes Pretty honest book hehe. I think if you are using a face cream that works perfectly fine on your under eye area without any sensitivity - go for it! My eyes are super sensitive and I find that my regular day moisturizer only irritates my eyes. I'm loving the Pep-start eye cream and Ren eye gel at the moment. Firm favourites xx
ReplyDeleteI use eye creams, I tried more than 4 ones and didn't find the HG one, but I will not stop searching. If you ask me an under eye cream is a must have to a great under eye area :)

I use eye creams, and have been a faithful lover of all the Cerave line for years now - you cannot go wrong with this line!
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with eye creams! Eyes seem like the first place age starts showing so it's the area I'm most concerned about!

Seriously lost on where to start! Most creams seem to be aimed at repairing aged eyes; however, I'm looking for something that is more preventative.

It's just marketing. Creating necessities to sell another product
