Winter is well and truly on the way and with every new season I like to add a few new clothing additions to my wardrobe -for the colder days there is nothing more important (well in my opinion anyway) than finding the perfect coat.

After being suitably impressed with my first visit to Silverburn  armed my phone with the Silverburn PLUS app available on iTunes or Google Play, I once again popped on the bus and headed to my new, favourite shopping destination to try on and  experience the five largest trends of A/W 2015 and hopefully find my idea of the dream coat.

White Coats and Jackets
Now this is a trend I wish I could embrace with open arms but due to my daily commute on less than clean buses and trains it isn't the ideal option.  However, a crisp white jacket would be the perfect staple (and perhaps replacement for a black coat) addition to any wardrobe, as it will suit every complexion and of course co-ordinate with any colour palette your outfit may feature. You could go down the classic white tailored jacket route (as seen on the runways of Fendi A/W15 shows) or perhaps try something a little more fun such as the above White Faux Fur coat from Topshop. For those who like the idea of a white coat, but perhaps want something a little less sparkling, and dare I say it bright in tone, why not try an off-white coat like the funnel neck jacket above from H&M or even a hounds-tooth print option which I found and fell in love with in H&M - of course I was utterly disappointed when my size was not available.

Style Tip - White and black are such a timeless combination aren't they? I would personally team a white jacket with black skinny jeans or trousers, a turtle neck top and over the knee boots for an effortless, yet classic, look.

Full Length Jackets and Coats
Long coats are the style of the moment if the recent Dior shows are anything to go by. At 5ft this was the most difficult style to embrace, a lot of jackets and coats that are full length are simply too long and swamp me. Sadly I couldn't find too many petite options but New Look did come up trumps with a soft, faux suede belted-come-waterfall trench coat. I also found a lovely selection of camel-toned full length coats in TK Maxx which would suit anyone over 5ft 3. The elongated length is great for creating the illusion of additional height - something I am clearly lacking in. There is a reason full length coats have been paraded up and down the catwalk recently - they are truly flattering, not to mention a great way to ensure you keep warm once the chilly mornings set in. I can't think of a better style to take you from the office to a night on the tiles with ease.

Style Tip - To prevent a full length coat from being too boxy or overwhelming pair with a skinny belt to add a little definition to the waist.

Touch of Fur
In my opinion nothing quite says winter like a hint of fur (faux fur of course) and luckily it is currently in an abundance thanks to the likes of D&G and Miu Miu making it a coat focal point. From cute, casual fur-trimmed coats to dressy, tailored jackets this trend is both classic and easy to embrace. I personally like a touch of fur combined with leather jackets for a soft, modern take on two classic trends. Of course how you embrace such trend is entirely up to you but I would use this jacket style to pair with oversized 70's style jeans and tan boots. I found that both New Look and TK Maxx had plenty of fur trimmed designs to flatter every figure and budget.

Style Tip - Perhaps be on the look-out for coats with a detachable fur collar - that way you can create two looks from one simple piece of clothing.

Military
Thanks to the current 90's rival and the runway shows of designers such as Sonia Rykiel, tough military inspired prints and tones of khaki green are dominating the clothing racks of many clothing stores. I prefer a more subtle approach to such a trend and have ditched the camo prints in favour of deep olive and khaki toned green coats that can be toughened up with hints of leather or hints of black as found in H&M. Think of a casual military jacket as an alternative to a blazer, perfect for lazy weekends and down-time.

Style Tip - To totally embrace the current 90's trend, why not pair with a pair of Timberland boots and classic blue jeans?

Tweed
The runways have been full of tweed coats with brands such as Chanel and Miu Miu leading the way - and if I am entirely honest it is my favourite trend of the five. Simple, classic and universally flattering on all sizes and of course ages (I'm not ageist, I think you should wear whatever you feel most happy in). Tweed is everywhere you look - I found the most beautiful tweed-style coat in Topshop that is slightly oversized to allow for layering. I especially like the large pockets which created the perfect balance of dressy casual. This is a coat that could be worn year in, year out and never appear dated, which makes it the perfect investment piece.

Style Tip - For an effortless, yet cool, approach to tweed, try pairing with white converse, an oversized scarf and woollen hat.

What trend did I settle on? Tweed of course, rather than settling on the above Topshop coat, I found the most beautiful tweed-come carpet style coat in M&S. It is slightly oversized so that I can bundle up come the cold weather with ease, yet doesn't swamp me - not an easy task, let me tell you! It is warm, snuggly, timeless and super comfortable. What more could I ask for?

So I recommend you pop to Silverburn to see the five key winter coat trends for yourself.  There are some really tempting offers on the PLUS app right now that are definitely worth checking out: 20% off food at La Tasca, 20% off at Fat Face for Students and Free Nando’s Halloumi.

Make sure you download the Silverburn PLUS app available on iTunes or Google Play before your next visit.
