The Best Blue Mascaras

Coloured mascara is back and back with a vengeance; blue, green, purple, brown and red tinged shades - there is something for everyone. On the most part, the more unusual shades of mascara have yet to filter down the ranks, and into the budget sector but blue mascara is everywhere. From bright, 80's throwback cobalt blues, to deep navy hues there is a blue mascara for everyone and every price point too. If you are looking for the perfect blue mascara, let me make the process a little easier with my top four picks...

Benefit They're Real Mascara in Beyond Blue

In my eyes (excuse the awful pun) Benefit They're Real Mascara in Beyond Blue is the stereotypical blue mascara hue that springs to mind, as soon as anyone mentions blue mascara? Bright, slightly retro in tone and very colour saturated - Benefit They're Real Mascara in Beyond Blue is the ultimate nod to the 1980's. Don't be put off by the bright shade as it is not only entirely flattering but surprisingly suit all.

I assumed that this bright blue shade, would enhance my mostly blue eyes but rather it makes the most of the green flecks within my eyes. If ever you wanted to give the appearance of more green tinged eye,s this is the mascara for you. Don't ask me how it works, as red toned shades are technically the best bet for enhancing green tones (it all boils down to the colour wheel) but it does.

Benefit They're Real Mascara in Beyond Blue has exceptional colour pay off, it will tint even the blackest of natural eyelashes in a coating of electric blue pigment - it's not for the faint hearted that's for sure. Much like the original Benefit They're Real Mascara, this adds both volume, length, a slight curl and layers up fairly well without clumping. The main downside is that I do find it tricky to remove (it behaves more like a waterproof mascara), and it is oddly prone to smudging - then again I do have oily skin and long lashes so this may not affect every user.

Collection Extreme Mascara in Blue

Perhaps you like the above idea of enhancing the natural green tones within your eyes, yet wish for a more subtle and dare I say it, affordable approach? In that case Collection Extreme Mascara in Blue is the mascara for you.

This lightweight mascara may not add an abundance of length, nor volume to the lashes and may not be as colour saturated as the Benefit version but it is not without its charm. It is however affordable, fun and a great way to add a quick flash of colour to your lashes without commitment. As an added bonus, the Collection Extreme Mascara formula is not prone to smudging, smearing or flaking and it layers well over black mascaras should you want to up the blue ante.

Clinique Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Massive Midnight

So we've covered the best options for those with blue and green toned eyes; what about those beautiful brown peepers? Clinique Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Massive Midnight that's what - this deep, almost navy blue tone product brings all shades of brown eyes alive. It is brightening and eye opening in one quick step. The deep shade seems to compliment deeper tones of eyes, as a result this may be the ideal shade if your eyes are deepest blue, grey or green. Two quick coats and your eyes will be sparkling in a way that even Edward Cullen would be jealous of.

Clinique Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Massive Midnight is also my choice for sensitive eyes as it doesn't irritate in the slightest - it is safe for contact lens wearers too. The fat, rubber comb style brush, gently grabs and coats every lash (even those pesky inner corner lashes), is easily removed with as a little as warm water and is not prone to smudging, flaking or smearing.

A pricey mascara, I'll give you that but the formula is wonderful - elongating, volumising and to an extent it fans out the lashes, adding a small curl as it goes. In a word, faultless.

Rimmel Kate Mascara in Eye Rock Sapphire

If like myself you prefer a more muted approach to colourful make up, Rimmel Kate Mascara in Eye Rock Sapphire is your safe bet. This is also the most suit all option of the four, in terms of shade - a deep, almost black, navy blue that translates to a deep inky hue on the lashes. This is one of those rare mascara shades in which, it only looks blue in certain lights - even then it is a refined, office friendly navy - rather than a bright, shocking bolt of colour. The formula and/or brush may not be to everyone's taste but this looks great on all complexions, ages and of course eye colours - I consider it to be the fail safe blue mascara.

I may not enjoy the curved brush that the Rimmel Kate Mascara in Eye Rock Sapphire features; I find that it creates more of mess than it does definition. Rather when using this mascara, I tend to team it with a disposable spoolie for ease of use. The formula itself, although thick it does not weigh my flimsy lashes down, it defines, add volume and to an extent lengths the lashes. I'm sure the aim of the brush is to curl and open the eyes but it is a nightmare to use for someone like myself, who has small, hooded eyes.
