A Note on Lush Facial Soaps

I can not recall the last time I have used soap on my face - as a teen it was all foaming cleansers and face wipes, soap seems so outdated and yet Lush offer three soap style cleansers for the face all of which sell exceptionally well. As a regular peruser of my local Lush store it took more than some convincing to purchase let alone try facial soap.

In the interest of research and of course comparison I purchased all three options, each of which has been created for different skin types and concerns. For sensitised skin and/or irritated skin there is Fresh Farmacy - a gentle calamine based soap that soothes irritation while being incredibly gentle , for dry skin Lush Movis Facial Soap has been created, it gently exfoliates using bread crumbs (yes really) all the while moisturising the skin. Lastly we have Lush Coalface  Soap which is a charcoal based soap that can be used daily to deeply cleanse or weekly as a sort of wash off, quick facial mask. At the moment I have all three soaps on rotation - I would say that my skin seems to enjoy Lush Fresh Faramcy Soap the most and would credit it for helping clear a few minor blemishes. I find Lush Movis Facial Soap to be a little too rich and Lush Coalface Soap can be a little stripping if used daily - keep in mind I have really oily skin.

So the pro's are that unlike traditional soap all of Lush soap bases are palm oil free and do include an abundance of natural oils (notably skin softening coconut oil) that you will not necessarily find in say a typical foaming cleanser. Out of all the Lush cleansers offered the soap variant's are the cheapest, starting at just £4.99 for a huge 200g slab - which of course can be cut into smaller, manageable chunks. If you travel frequently a little block of facial soap may be the way forward as it will not leak and can of course be popped into a carry on bag. As there is no spill or waste - you lather the facial soap up as you would with any bar of soap. A £4.99 slab will last months on end, not to mention all three Lush variants have been designed to be used on both the face and body - talk about bang for your buck.

The downside is that it is soap, it doesn't matter what way you look at it and yes that does mean it contains a foaming/lathering ingredient which happens to be a sulfate - sodium lauryl sulfate. This is the same compound found in shampoo and the majority of liquid soaps. I don't know enough about said ingredient to really state my stance but it is a known irritant and can with regular use dry out the skin - which is why along the way most of us have ditched soap as a facial cleanser. I won't be ditching Lush Facial Soaps rather I keep them as an array of quick fixes - Lush Movis is ideal for a gentle yet hydrating facial scrub - perfect for ridding it of any minor dry patches. Lush Fresh Farmacy comes into play when my skin breaks out due to an allergic reaction and Lush Coalface is the perfect travel solution to a messy clay/charcoal based face mask. They all have their uses just not daily.

In my opinion Lush Facial Soaps are somewhat novel, fun to use occasionally but a little too harsh for daily use, of course others will feel differently and that is entirely okay.

Do you use Lush Facial Soap or any facial soap for that matter, or do you see it as an outdated cleansing method?
