So many of my blog posts are dedicated towards products I recommend and to some extent favour but I don't think I have ever sat down and typed up a post full of products that I don't enjoy. No not specific products but rather categories of cosmetics and skin care that I go out of my way to avoid and why. I should point out as I do not purchase the below products all that often if ever, I don't have them to hand to photograph hence the somewhat generic shot above fron my archives.
Lipgloss
Admittedly I have a good few lip glosses rolling around my bag and make-up storage but very seldom other than testing purposes do I reach for them. Why? I personally dislike the texture, generally speaking they are sticky which is less than ideal when you have long hair and live in a city known for its less than sunny weather.
Aerosol Deodorant
Oddly I am allergic, it doesn't matter which brand I use sooner or later my underarms will react. This is only something that has happened in the last year or so, despite all my efforts there seems to be no spray on brand that I can use. The best thing for my skin is natural formulations which more often than not are roll-on's. I personally recommend the Melvita deodorant range, it is really gentle, free from nasties and effective. As a side note it has been said before that aerosol deodorants can cause cancer, anyone concerned about this risk should really read this article (by cancer specialists) to put their minds at ease - link.
Traditional Face Scrubs
I am heavy handed, which when it comes to scrubs does not bode well. I scrub far too harshly and irritate my complexion - no-one sets out to create red, inflamed and painful skin do they? It is safer for me to use acidic toners as they exfoliate gently leaving my skin soft and glowing. I also don't agree with the plastic exfoliating beads that certain brands use, environmentally they don't make sense but I will leave that research up to you.
Foaming Cleansers
As a teen and in my very early twenties all I used was a combination of facial wipes and foaming facial cleansers - whoops and whoops. Truthfully what others use on their skin is their business and if it works for you, great but foaming cleansers (generally speaking of course, there are exceptions to every rule) don't work for my skin type. Most will know I have oily and on occasion combination skin, the foaming agents in certain brands are simply too harsh and strip my skin of natural oils. The end result is either my skin produces more excess oil than normal to over compensate or it dry and flaky. Less than ideal, hardly surprising when some brands use a similar ingredient to that found in liquid soap i.e hand wash and dish soap. Lovely!
Black Khol Liner
I have small hooded eyes and typically I apply khol liners to my waterline, as someone with small eyes the last thing I want to do is optically reduce the size of my eyes. Don't get me wrong I have a few black khol liners within my stash but I tend to use them as eyeshadow bases rather than in the typical sense. If you have small eyes I can not recommend a nude or white khol liner for your waterlines enough!
Do you agree with anything above or would do you have completely different beauty products you avoid?
fun post! I dont wear lipgloss either... Sticks to my hair more than to my lips:P

Something which I do not use that many others do is Fake Tan~ ^ ^
ReplyDeleteI love my pale skin the way it is! ^ - ^

I'm the same except I have no idea on how to apply it correctly therefore have no interest in using it. X
Deleteblogsandpearls.blogspot.co.uk
I don't wear lipgloss and don't bother with toner as my face is usually clean enough after cleansing. Most of them irritate my skin too!
ReplyDeleteMary // beautyonthecheap.net
i don't do super bright colors as they don't look good with my skintone!
ReplyDeletemakeupmusicbooks.blogspot.com
I feel the same way although I am trying to branch out into trying bolder colours this year. X
Deleteblogsandpearls.blogspot.co.uk
Agree with you totally on the lip gloss and foaming cleansers! I'm trying to remember to wear lip gloss more on days my lips are chapped and put my hair in a bun, because it is more moisturizing than my usual matte-ish lip.
ReplyDeleteI never use any of those products either - lip gloss is so icky. I will have to try Melvita deodorant, I love that brand. I use the Lush Aromaco bar at the moment, I have repurchased it a few times now. I stopped using aerosol deodorant for the reason you pointed out - links to cancer, aluminium etc.

Agree on the lipgloss front, I have the odd one for days where I can't be bothered with lipstick but I do agree that the majority are sticky! xx
ReplyDeletehttp://www.rinicawrites.com
I don't like gloss either. I have a few that are either very basic for days when I am running late or too beautiful not to have
ReplyDeleteNot liking foaming cleansers either and for the same exact reasons as you!
I react to most aerosol deodorants too but I've found that the sanex deodorants stop the reaction!!
ReplyDeletehttp://oh-ems.blogspot.co.uk
Totally agree with you about gloss - too impractical!
ReplyDeleteABlogByPhilippa
Aah I'm the same with lipgloss, theres so many nice alternatives that don't get all stuck in your hair!

I cannot cope with lipgloss at all, it drives me insane with it stickiness and getting my hair caught in it is never a good look.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for a post. I'm sure we all have loads of items we never use.

I don't get on with aerosol deodorant either, Soft & Gentle (the plain scent) is the only one that doesn't bring me out in a rash.

i stay firmly away from toners as I just feel like they make my skin tight, and I also tend to avoid eye cream as although they are supposed to reduce puffiness i always wake up with swollen eyes. Plus I'm the same with exfoliators!
ReplyDeleteIm totally with you on the foaming cleansers :) I have oily skin too and although the foaming cleansers seem so easy to use and leaves skin feeling squeeky clean, I feel that it does strip my skin of all the moisture :D
ReplyDeleteThis was a really interesting post. Hope you have a lovely day! ♥

It seems as though i'm with the majority of people here and hate using lipgloss because my hair gets stuck in it. I also can't get along with cream based fake tan, it has to be foam or I end up stripy haha! xx
ReplyDeletewww.kirstytalks.co.uk
Completetly agree on the lipgloss...in fact I very rarely use any form of lip products as I can't stand the feeling of them on my lips!
ReplyDeletewww.beckiiee12.blogspot.co.uk/
I like lipsgloss if it's unconventional (i.e. YSL's new Tint-In-Oil formulas) - generally, though, they just accumulate and never get used.
ReplyDeleteI don't use eyeliner at all - never quite got the hang of it, much to my chagrin (particularly during my Amy Winehouse phase a few years ago, haha!) I also have a few eyeshadow palettes but never use them as I don't quite feel confident putting eyeshadow on without the fear of looking like a clown. I really should just get over it, but alas...
http://www.thefakeup.com
Mine are exactly the same, although I don't use aerosols because I feel they don't work as well on me. I'm glad I'm not into gloss or eyeliner as saves me some money ( in theory)
ReplyDeleteI dislike lipgloss too, I get too annoyed constantly picking me out my hair (Gross I know) x
ReplyDeletepintsizedbeauty.blogspot.co.uk
I'm 100% hopeless with eyeliner! ;) X
ReplyDeletemademoiselle-lala.com
I dislike lipglosses and black khols as well, the texture of the lipglosses are always too creamy and sticky and the black khols always smudge and look horrible on me!

Totally agree with the lipgloss! Just the thought of having it on right now and my hair being stuck to it makes me feel gross
ReplyDeletewww.izzyfayce.blogspot.co.uk
I agree with all of this -- except lipglosses! I loveee my Clarins natural lip perfectors, you should try because they are nonsticky and really smooth on the lips.

Oh yeah, scrubs aren't good for me either, I tend to overscrub. And I don't like spray deodorants either. I feel like the spray goes everywhere. My face, my eyes, my lungs, blegh.
ReplyDeleteLip gloss and Kohl eyeliner definitely!! I also don't get on too well with cream blushers!

Black khol liners make me look like alice cooper with eyes the size of 5p pieces.
ReplyDeleteI feel you about the lipgloss....I can't wear them either ^_^
ReplyDeleteBubblyBeauty
I totally agree with you on the foaming cleansers! I always end up breaking out or just being way too dry.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agree about the foaming cleansers. I am a big fan of lipgloss though, for more natural make up days! I tend to steer clear of moisturizer, I haven't found any that work with my very oily skin yet :(

Haha if those baby lips electric lip balm/gloss whatever they are falls onto your list I must say they are on mine too lol. I thought I was the only person that didn't use them. Made the purchase after just getting into YT and saw them on sale for 99p n bought all of em...MASSIVE WASTE they just sit there in my vanity drawer. I must say though I love me some e.l.f liquid lipstick which is kinda like a lipgloss - inexpensive but minty n worth every penny.

All of these are the exact same as mine! I hate all of those you have listed! I love posts like these! Would love to see products you regret buying!

I sometimes stupidly buy lip glosses cause I think my opinion will change and it never does, you can just always feel the residue of them being there! xx
ReplyDeleteThrough New Eyes | Beauty Blog
Definitely not impressed with "foaming" face washes. find the foam is a distraction from actually cleaning (as if the foam tricks you into thinking its clean).
ReplyDeleteWandering 20-Something. | Lifestyle, Beauty, & Fashion Blog
I agree with most of these points - I'm not a lipgloss fan (not since I was 14, anyway) and I also avoid fake tan like the plague.
ReplyDeleteTessa at Bramble & Thorn
I hate aerosol deoderants, they irritate my skin and make it so itchy! Plus I don't like putting it on in the morning, it's so cold against my skins- I hate it!
ReplyDeletehttp://thelittlebluesailboat.blogspot.co.uk/
Great post!! I dont use lip gloss either, for the same reasons as you, I tried the dandelion gloss from benefit and it wasn't sticky, and the taste was OK but not for me.. foaming cleanser is another one! x
ReplyDeleteloved this post and can't agree more! i don't use traditional scrubs and deodorants either. lip gloss for me is an eternal struggle though - i love how they look in the tube and that forever tempts me!

I've given up fake tan as I prefer to be pale and freckly
ReplyDeleteI stay away from Fake tan , eyeliners and face scrubs xox

I'm not a lipgloss girl either; I hate the gloopy feel and my hair just gets stuck in it lol. I do like foaming cleanser though and use Origins Checks and Balances most days xx

I never use fake tan or bronzer - I'm so pale it just makes me look dirty. And kohl eyeliners of any colour are smudge city for me.
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I completely agree with the fake tan and bronzer story - I am too pale.
ReplyDeleteLizzie Dripping
I haven't used fake tan in like 8 years! I decided to just favour my milk bottle skin and save money haha xxx
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post and I do have to say, I agree with most of these points, especially sticky lip gloss and long hair...its just not a good combination at all!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! I don't typically use any of these anymore either :)
ReplyDeletewww.gorgeousandstuff.com
I can only put on lipgloss if I have my hair up, so I don't have to deal w/ my hair sticking to my lips.
ReplyDelete- I never use scrubs either; I used to scrub my face within an inch of its life when I was younger because i believed it would rid me of my horrible black heads. Alas, it didn't! Now I never scrub my face I only ever use scrubs on my body.
ReplyDelete- I never use roll on deodorant because I hate the wet sticky feeling you get when you first apply it (although I have tried 1 sure roll on, the max protection one, and quite liked that)
... such a brilliant idea for a post, would you mind if I did one and credited you?

Wow - judging by the comments above - you have hit the nail on the head! Yes - I do not use or like lipglosses because of the sticky feeling they leave. Give me a good, hydrating lipstick instead. I also find that they leave my lips dry when the gloss part has worn off.
ReplyDeleteI haven't used spray deodorants for years - roll ons are much better and I use Dove Sensitive.
As for facial scrubs - I think that a lot of people have been sucked into using these way too often. I think it can damage your skin. Having sensitive skin I use the Aveda for sensitive skin once a week or every 10 days very gently. I think a gentle cream cleanser is good too.
As I have very pale skin - having fake tans is a big waste of time for me. With my red hair it would look ridiculous. I think people should love the skin tone they have.
And as for black Khol liners - well I have hooded eyes too and it makes me look like a very bad panda - so a no-no for me as well.
What a great post - thank you so much.
I'm going to have to take a look at that deodrant because my armpits get irritated and many deodrants aren't actually that effective I feel - maybe it's just me though!!
ReplyDeletehannah @ http://hansaddiction.blogspot.co.uk/
I don't use traditional face scrubs either - the Pixi Glow Tonic is my exfoliator of choice! xx

I also don't use lipgloss, I love the look it gives but I just can't stand the feeling of it.
ReplyDeleteAlso hate when the hair gets in it. Ugh.

I thought everyone LOVED lipgloss... I hate it. I think I own one lip gloss and I almost never use it.
