Color Stories - Behind the Scenes of America's Billion-Dollar Beauty Industry by Mary Lisa Gavenas

Best described as a behind the scenes look at what keeps the hugely profitable Western beauty market ticking so furiously, what tricks the brand leaders deploy to keep us coming back for more...and then some more, alongside all the in's and out's of the industry. Admittedly on paper this may read a tad dry as a subject matter but I can assure you that it is a fairly light, entertaining and all together fascinating and educational read. No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O'Conner and Alexandra Sprout

For complete transparency I will quickly state that there are elements of this book that I don't personally agree with - some of it can lead a tad scaremongering, however I did appreciate that this is an insightful and helpful guide to not only what goes into the majority of beauty products in terms of ingredients but also as to why they are typically included. I particularly found the occasional case study scattered throughout the book interesting, as well as the included FDA's stances on certain ingredients. No More Dirty Looks may just cause you to re-evaluate your entire beauty regime. You can get it here for £8.99 - link.

Pretty Iconic - Sali Hughes

I don't know Sali personally but I wish I did as I am sure many do too; her personable but knowledgeable writing style makes for the perfect rainy afternoon read and feels very much like you are in the company of a dear friend. Let Sali whisk you down memory lane, divulging into great detail all the beauty finds, scents, textures and mishaps that have moulded both her life and career. It is not often that I can state that a book based around cosmetics, fragrances and all things frivolous is charming but I truly can't think of a better way to describe Pretty Iconic and after finishing the last page, I was left yearning for more.
