Earlier this year, L'Oréal finally unleashed their best selling and ever hyped setting spray - L'Oréal Infalliable Pro Set and Spray Make Up Extender Setting Spray within the UK/I.R.E; a mouthful to say but a great budget option none the less. What may have slipped under the radar due to the L'Oréal fuss, is the slightly cheaper but just as great, Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray - I guess the first "dupe" is always going to be the one that generates the most attention? A shame really when this a wonderful option that will save you a few pennies to boot too.
The Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray may not have the slick appearance of the L'Oréal nor Urban Decay setting sprays for that matter, but I urge you to look beyond the white and red bottle. One of the most important aspects of a setting spray - formulation aside - is how the product is dispensed; ideally you are looking for a super fine mist that evenly coats the skin without drenching the complexion, all of which the Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray delivers and with ease. Simply hold the bottle of the Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray at arms length, close your eyes and mist on the skin - it really couldn't be more straight forward.
As you may have noticed, most setting sprays do tend to be infused with various vitamins and skin saving ingredients so that they not only set make-up but also act as a skin treatment too? This is not the case with the Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray, to be cost efficient Maybelline have stripped back the ingredients to the bare basics. As such no, the Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray won't deeply hydrate, nor protect your skin against the elements but it will lock your make-up firmly in place. Which is really all most of us will require from a setting spray - if you want skincare like benefits surely you turn to skincare products?
Yes, the Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray is fairly basic but it does all it claims to and a little more, all the while being oil free and comfortable to wear. As you'd expect, Maybelline's first setting spray does just that - it sets your make-up in place without changing the finish or colour of any product it is sprayed over. Admittedly this is not a claim that you will find on the side of the bottle or general marketing bumph, but I have found that this gentle mist, does a great job of keeping oil at bay, and without further dehydrating my skin to boot. If you really struggle with oily skin (and/or perhaps live in a balmy environment), you can substitute the Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray in place of your normal primer for a little more grit before make-up application. Not only is Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Setting Spray completely translucent but it is weightless, breathable and generally a joy to wear. I can't think of a better budget option.
