Unless you are super strict with yourself and don't posses even the slightest hint of hoarding tendencies, chances are you have a few stray make-up brushes that you don't ever use? Perhaps said brushes were gifted to you, maybe they were part of set or they were bought with only good intentions and now gather dust; however you came by them, they simply aren't being used and I can't help but wonder why?
I use a lot of make-up brushes, probably more than I need to as I only have one face; those brushes I don't feel guilty about as like I said they are being used, it is my little pot stuffed with neglected beauty tools that hits me hard. The brushes I don't use are all of the same purpose - foundation and concealer, and both happen to be flat in shape. Now of course in the right hands, I am more than sure they work wonders but I deem them to be a cosmetic hindrance than anything else.
I've stated in the past for foundation application I have three go-to methods: my hands, a flat top kabuki brush or a beauty blender - all of which is dependant on the texture of the base product I am using. Goodness knows I have tried with other foundation brushes but very few deliver the results I am looking for, especially not a flat foundation brush. In my experience such brush is not only difficult and time consuming to work with but also prone to - in my hands at least - creating an uneven finish. Why do I keep such brushes in my collection? Sometimes I do use them to slick on cream contour and highlighting products, before blending our for precision but I never reach for a flat foundation brush for its intended purpose.
In the very same vain, I don't particularly enjoy nor use flat concealer brushes - yes I may grab one to gently pat on concealer before blending out with a fluffy brush or my fingertips, then again that is a rare occurrence. Much like the foundation brush of the same shape I find flat concealer brushes to be fairly problematic - streaky results with a heavier finish - and tend to leave them well alone. I fully admit that a lack of skill and patience could be to blame here but why force it, there are plenty of great brush styles out there that work for me so why become frustrated over a particular style?
What make-up brush if any don't you use nor rate for that matter?
I have plenty of disused make up brushes, and have always bought with the best intentions, but they never get much use as I had hoped. Great post lovely.

I have so many brushes I don't use either! x

the only brush I don't use and will never use is a "typical" foundation brush. I happen to own 2, one Sigma that came in a set, and one travel size that came also with a set. They never got used not even once! I have many other brushes and use them all (of course not in one go) but this allows me to prolong the washing term ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm so bad at keeping brushes I don't use! Great post, really enjoyed it.

I am in exactly the same boat, I find foundation brushes to be super streaky. Also fan brushes, I have the best intentions for them but then it always ends in tears.
ReplyDeleteI never use a lip brush, preferring always to just use a lip liner and then the lipstick straight from the bullet x

ReplyDeleteI seem to use the same brushes all the time and the others just sit there looking pretty. Although I have 6 of one particular brush because it is my go to for foundation if I'm not using my beauty blender, but suppose that's just to avoid having to was them too often! Although I then have to wash 6 at once lol.

I am exactly the same. I NEVER use my flat face brushes, Real Techniques core kit is half neglected. The two flat brushes never get used, neglected. But they just don't work for me. The Bobbi Brown face brush and the RT buffing brush are my ultimate. Big round and just flawless application

I like seeing which brushes end up unused so I don't waste my money buying them! xx

I actually chucked the two foundation brushes I owned as I never used them - my hoarding tendencies are quite low! :D

I literally just turned to my makeup vanity and looked all the brushes I dont use :/ One brush that does stand out, is the foundation brush, I don't like painting on my base , I like to buff it in!

Ohhh this is a really interesting post! I actually have so many brushes that I neglect too but I feel like I still can't part ways with them hahah! Since getting a beauty blender though I literally have to force myself to try and use a foundation brush... I just feel like nothing compares! I've only started using a concealer brush too with one of those amazing Becca Correctors, works wonders for covering up my acne! x

I have a few MAC Brushes that I figured I would use in theory, but don't end up getting a lot of use

I have a stupid number of brushes. Maybe I should sell some of them! I especially hate those fan highlighter brushes and eyebrow brushes that aren't stiff enough!

I'm not a fan of flat foundation brushes at all as it feels like I'm painting my foundation on and I can obviously be left with brush strokes if I'm not careful. I much prefer buffing foundation into my skin or when I can be bothered, bouncing it on x

I've purchased sooo many brushes but I always end up not using them. I guess we girls just love the idea of having a brush more than the actual brush.

I have so many makeup brushes that I don't use! I have a whole draw (hate to admit it) meanwhile I will stick to my tiny cup of bushes that I use repeatedly and even beyond their cleanliness. I'm a creature of habit. This post is making me feel like I should go purge a few and find good homes for them.

I hate the flat foundation brush. It always makes me look uneven!! I also never use lip or eyeliner brushes! I have loads of them and they are collecting dust.

you've just reminded me to go and wash my brushes haha

I never really use flat foundation brushes - so much effort to try and get a blended, even finish xx

I actually bought the Real Techniques Face Brush to try and buff in my foundation after seeing so many rave reviews (I have only been using foundation for around six months and was using just a foundation brush) but have found it really bad for applying foundation, I've tried using it with a Rimmel and a Maybelline and it leaves the foundation all cakey and awful, especially around my nose! I'm going to repurpose it as a brush for contouring when I eventually get round to learning how to do that.
ReplyDeletePS I just started a new blog and used your Feb blogging prompts to get going so thanks so much for that! <3

I'm the same with flat foundation and concealer brushes so I use them to apply face masks, makes it less messy xxx
