A pressed powder that can tackle oil, sweat and even water?
Sounds a little too good to be true doesn't it?
Well not really Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Waterproof Pressed Powder is a stand up powder at a low price point and here is why...
A quick glance over the packaging - it is slim, white and plastic. It is well sized and not only contains 9g of product but also a great quality mirror and also a powder puff. No it won't win a prize for aesthetics but let me tell you it is robust, after two weeks of rolling around the bottom of my bag will testament.
So yes Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Waterproof Pressed Powder claims to be not only waterproof (a hydrophobic formulation which is said to act like a barrier and repel liquids),but resistant to shine, oil, sweat and heat. A tall order indeed. First of all it isn't waterproof - for the sake of testing purposes I first applied this to my hand, dipped it in a basin of water quickly and removed. The powder was all but gone from my hand. I then applied this to my face, turned the shower down really low to mimic rain and quickly ran my face through the stream. Again the powder did not pass the test. However don't let that put you off as it does work wonderfully in terms of keeping oil at bay without leaving the skin caked in product or overly matte.
The texture of Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Waterproof Pressed Powder is silky soft and feels light weight on the face, in my opinion it has the texture of a more expensive product. In terms of coverage this is fairly light in that it will even out the skin tone and set make-up but it will not conceal to any extent. Truthfully the shade I have 30 Sand is a little on the deep side for my skin tone at the moment but applied with a brush it is wearable but applied with a puff for a fuller level of coverage the fact it is too dark is evident. Oddly this is one of the few coloured powders that does not oxidise on my oily skin which is a first.
Shade and main claim disappointment aside here is why I rate the Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Waterproof Pressed Powder it really does keep oil at bay without looking heavy on the skin or being overly matte. The finish is satin and brilliant for a night out when the heat of a night club all but melts of your entire face of make-up. If this is a problem you deal with frequently or perhaps live in an environment that is constantly balmy or humid this is the powder for you. It will not only keep your make-up in place but leave you oil free and looking fresh all day long...24 hours may be stretching the truth somewhat but up to 10 hours on my oily complexion is not to sniffed at.

I have really oily skin and I'm still looking for something that will keep oil at bay but doesn't add too much extra coverage. This really does sound brilliant. In regards to shades, is there a wide range? I have pale skin and a lot of drug store products are too dark/too yellow toned for me!
ReplyDeleteWill definitely have to have a look at this, though.

Really want to try it. I'm looking for a good powder is a matte finish.
ReplyDeleteI've tried this one, but I think I still prefer the Rimmel Stay Matte, I love the finish it gives.
ReplyDeleteGreat review and its nice to see a reasonably priced product doing what it says on the packet!

Why on earth would they make a claim as preposterous as waterproof, I have no clue. However, from your review it seems to be a good one for oily skin types. Is it better than Stay Matte?

I have been looking for something like this, not really waterproof but to keep the oily skin at bay. Sounds like a really good investment :]

All right, that's what I was searching for. A colored, cheap, good against oil powder! The image of trying under the shower was really fun, thanks for doing the little experiment for us :D
ReplyDeleteIf they have a fair enough shade, I definitely want to try this :) if it stops me having to touch up my make-up at work it's a winner! xx
ReplyDeleteToo bad it failed on the waterproof part when it claims to be one! But good thing it did great in keeping oil at bay.
ReplyDeleteI only ever wear powder on a night out, so this sounds like a great option!
