I feel the need to begin this post with a disclaimer not because I have something to hide but because my hair is pretty rebellious heavy and frankly does what it likes. So although this review may not be exactly glowing it is not through the fault of the product but my hair type. Now that is out of the way let me share a few thoughts on Sleep In Rollers.
Like most I had read the rave reviews of Sleep In Rollers and thought yup, you are the thing my hair care dreams are made off. Anything that will tame my mane with little fuss and I'm sold and what is more fuss free than a product you sleep in while it curls and adds volume to your hair. Almost to good to be true wouldn't you agree? Well sadly for me that was indeed the case.
Essentially the Sleep In Rollers are large, soft foam centered Velcro rollers which to their credit are really well made and rather pretty. To use you simply roll into dry hair, secure and pop off to bed in the hope of awakening to big bouncy curls. So with all the enthusiasm in the world I began winding in the Sleep In Rollers, securing with kirby grips (bobby pins) and began daydreaming about the Cheryl Cole hair that would await me in the coming morning.
Only there was a problem not matter how I tried I couldn't get comfortable with these rollers upon my head, yes they are foam and soft but they felt alien and prevented me from getting a good nights sleep. Eventually I feel asleep but either through restlessness or myself removing some of the rollers in my sleep I awoke to a good few unraveled curls. Not the good start but I wasn't all that bothered and vowed to touch up the loosened roller segments with a curling tong is needs be and began removing the remaining rollers. Cue the second wave of disappointment, not a curl in sight with very little volume.
I think the heavy weight of my hair prevented the rollers from working. It has since been drawn to my attention that perhaps a quick spray of hairspray would have set the curls but for me that defeats the purpose. I wanted carefree bouncy curls that looked and felt natural not a head full of product. For me the Sleep In Rollers are not the wonder product that I had hoped them to be as I can't get a good nights rest while wearing them nor did they do much for my thick, heavy hair.
I'm glad the Sleep In Rollers work for others but for me the search to quick, easy but groomed hair continues.

I didn't like these at all either. I found them extremely uncomfortable to sleep in and they did nothing for my hair either. They just made the ends flick out. Which I hated. I haven't seen anyone whos hair they actually curled like a curling wand would. I think they are a little misleading as in all the ads I've seen online, they show these celebs with them in, and then with big bouncy curls later on which is what I expected. But really they just give the roots volume and don't really curl at all (well this is what I've seen in all the photos in other reviews).
ReplyDeleteI actually regret paying €20 for them so much that I actually did a very ranty reveiw on them haha.

checked ur blog after a long time.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to get some rollers for a while, but some days I have thick hair and other days it's thin. Maybe these ones are off the cards, I struggle to sleep anyway!

I have to agree with this review, I was quite underwhelmed with my sleep in rollers too. I couldn't sleep properly, couldn't get the rollers to stay in place and although I did get some volume, there were no curls in sight.
ReplyDeleteThe hype around them really confuses me! xx

They wouldnt be any good for me as i have to wash my hair every day.x
ReplyDeleteI have the Laurens Way Dream Rollers which are similar to these. I use them after blow drying to give a curl and they work so well! I couldn't live without them now and I would full recommend them to anyone. I get both curls and volume :) I've never tried sleeping with them in however!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear these Sleep Rollers didn't work out for you

I found this too with these rollers! I woke up every hour because the velcro was irritating my head and my hair came out with no volume or curls, just a lot of frizz! Im glad I'm not the only one who couldn't get on with them :) xx

I didn't like the idea of these when I heard about them - I just thought they made it sound as thought you'd be able to sleep in them AND be totally comfortable which sounds impossible. I remember how I felt sleeping with hair extensions in and just couldn't handle it again so I'll give these a miss!
ReplyDeleteGood review though :)

I have some similar to these and I find my hair just gets stuck in them and they dont really curl my hair. I would rather use a curling iron.

I have some good Denman thermo-ceramic rollers. I wear only about three or four to sleep in, mainly the top of my head to get some volume. They work and don't bother me at all at night. XX

Good idea but unfortunately I wouldn't be able to sleep with them in! To me sleep is a bit more important than luscious hair (only a little bit!)

I received the big and bouncy sleep in rollers for Christmas and was so excited to use them. However when I woke up my hair was not curly, maybe slightly wavy? The only thing I can say is they are great for creating volume at the top of my head so I always put a few in before I go on a night out.

I was thinking about Sleep In Rollers just recently when I came across my abandoned bag of them tucked away in my room. I think they are very hard to sleep in- yes soft-ish, but it sort of feels like you're raised on your pillow. I found they created bouncy waves but it was too much hassle for me! X

It's a shame you was diappointed with these rollers. I like the idea of waking up with curly hair so no messing about in the morning but I don't think I could sleep in them!

I didn't mind sleeping with these in, I got used to them pretty quickly. I thought they were a complete waste of money though. I woke up with flat, straight hair. Not a curl, wave or any volume in sight. And my hair's not thick in the slightest! xx

I was so excited when I seen the you did a review of these, awww what a shame, I have thick hair too so for me they would probably not work either, I'm in the market for some rollers/curlers as I just straighten my hair and it's getting boring!

Roller work well for me and I have thick and long hair. But I need to use them while it's wet and I have tried sleeping in them which turned out to be a massive failure.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine sleeping in these would still be a little uncomfortable but I think they may have more effect on my seriously fine hair!

Just an idea, what about trying them in wet hair? I used to use normal rollers (ouch) in wet hair overnight and the curls were incredible. I can imagine it would work well with these too?
ReplyDeleteI think that may work :) just don't think I could sleep in wet hair...I like my comfort haha!
DeleteI have these and i have thick heavy hair as well, but i had to admit i love them. I have never tried to sleep in them but i did buy the dryer hood to speed up the process. I found that when you use the hood it really helps. If you look at holly wakehams blog she does a great tutorial about how to put them in and stuff.

I haven't tried the sleep in ones, but I did sleep in he normal velcro jumbo rollers on Thursday night. Like Nikki ^^ the results were amazing - I woke up with bouncy-bouncy hair. Although I kept getting awoken by night-terrors - maybe the rollers had something to do with it? Can't say it was the most comfortable night's sleep! xx
ReplyDeleteHave you tried hot rollers? I fell in love with rollers a few years ago, but found it irritating that i'd have to wear them for aaaages, plus the sleep-in ones never worked for me either. You can get a set of hot rollers for about £16 that you can leave in for 5 mins and get amazing Cheryl Cole-eque hair instantly ;)

Different size rollers give different effects. A smaller roller will create a tighter curl, larger rollers create a flicky effect and result in a lot of volume. If you are trying to create a look that naturally your hair isn't, you will need product. Same goes for all styling, if you have big curly hair and want the sleek look, you use serums. If you are using rollers your best bet is to use a lightweight everyday shampoo (specialist shampoos weigh the hair down) and very little conditioner if any. When I am using rollers I NEVER use conditioner purely because my hair is heavy and it weighs it down too much. Using a mousse before drying the hair and a setting spray works wonders. As you said the whole using product thing wasn't what you wanted, but unfortunately if you want your hair to do something that it doesn't naturally do you will have to! If you want Cheryl Cole hair, a blowdry with a large barrel brush is the way forward followed by setting the look with rollers which are usually kept in for god knows how long and a lot of hair pieces and extensions. Believe you me, being a hairdresser I have heard clients asking for that look multiple times and trust me a lot of product goes into it. The hair will only feel stiff and look artificial if you use the wrong products, i.e hair sprays and lacquers are a no go!
ReplyDeleteBare in mind everyones hair is different and takes well to different products and techniques so its worth trying everything until you find something that suits you!
I have used normal Velcro rollers/sleep ins/heated rollers all with success using different sizes and products to suit me.
Your other option is to get a personal hairdresser :)
I used to use these and they worked for me o.o Maybe the sections were too thick? I used mine on smaller sections with slightly damp hair (juuuuust before it dries. If it's too wet, it won't dry by the time you wake up) and they worked fine. Then again, I have frizzy/wavy/curly hair that holds up a curl for a very long time...
ReplyDeleteHi, I have similar hair texture to yours, and these rollers have been great for me. I watched Holly Wakeham's tutorial first and followed her tip: for thick hair, dampen it to set the curl. If my hair is wet then it won't dry rolled in a curler. The other tip that Holly gave and the previous commenter did :) is to use smallish sections. In fact, my first set I didn't use all of the rollers and had some discomfort. But the second set I used all of the rollers, with some pretty small sections in the back (I started at the crown and worked backwards). Using all of the rollers actually made it more comfortable. The weight spread around better. How about using a feather pillow to arrange the fullness? Also there is less pulling from narrower sections. You will notice the rollers, of course, but it doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable. Finally a hair net (did you say eek?) will keep the rollers better in place, the velcro off your ears, and reduce the incidence of pulling. Go ahead and try them again! --Katharine in Brussels, whose husband is signed in :)
