A few weeks ago Maybelline Lasting Drama 24H Gel Eyeliner was on offer in Superdrug
for less than £6 as I am very nearly finished my much loved Inglot version I thought I'd give it a whirl
seeing as it has had more than a few recommendations in the blogging world!
Housed in a little frosted glass jar - I personally hate frosted glass it just feels bizarre!
With a metal screw top lid and a complementary eye-liner brush it more than exceeds
the other high street gel liners available in terms of packaging.
However it can be argued that glass is not the most travel friendly option
with it having a tendency to break when bumped and not being allowed in air port hand luggage.
The liner is currently only available in one shade - 01 Intense Black
but I would bet money on other shades springing up in the near future.
The black gel is glossy in potted form, applies glossy but dries to an almost matte finish.
It glides on with such ease and feels light and creamy.
I found 01 Intense Black to be a true black with no blue undertones both in potted form and swatched.
Yet once applied to my eyes it takes a more grey hue but more on that later.
The complimentary brush is sturdy and well made, it is actually rather good for a freebie
It is soft yet firm and applies the liner well, making light work of fine and thick lines.
the only thing I can think that would be an improvement would be to implement a slanted edge
rather than the current rounded bristles but that is just a personal grievance.
I was rather taken by this liner until I actually applied and wore it for a day.
Maybelline claim that their gel liner is non transfer yet it creased and smudged all over my eye lid instantly,
at first I blamed this on it having a long drying time and patiently waited on it to dry and settle.
Yet 20 minutes later it was still slipping and sliding and generally just being a nuisance.
This of course could be my oily skin to blame but I did lay down a primer before application.
It also lacks the "intense colour" aspect yes it initially applies fairly black but within an hour of wear
I found the shade to fade to a mid toned blue grey hue loosing all the drama
and impact of the the promised Intense Black shade.
The 24 hour claim is a bit of a joke in reality as it failed to last much longer on my eye area
for much longer than 4 hours and it looked shoddy much before that time mark.
Have you had a better experience with this?
Or is it just another product that doesn't live up the hype?
Product Summary
Round Up - A black gel liner that comes with a complimentary brush, does not live up to Maybelline's claims of intense colour, non-transfer nor the 24 hour wear test.
Best For - Perhaps those that require a more natural black liner?
Pigmentation - Initially it is very black around the 9/10 rating yet fades and fades rapidly to the 3/10 mark.
Avaliability - Most Maybelline but it is still currently on offer on www.superdrug.com - link for £5.99.
ooo i was contemplating a new gel liner and people kept ranting about this, but it just isn't as intense as i'd want!! how disappointing! but fab review! thanks love xxx
ReplyDeleteOne word for you m'dear Inglot I promise best gel liner EVER! x
DeleteI can't believe you don't like it! :)
ReplyDeleteI love it so much that I don't even bother to look at any other and I also got a backup of the blue one. But maybe it's just my taste for liners (although I didn't got any smudging, fading).
Love your reviews :))
Firstly thank you :) and perhaps it is my skin type but yeah I just was not blown away :( x
Deletei always use the gelliner by essence
ReplyDeletesadly I can't source that here x
DeleteIt deff looks like the essence one! I have it here. I will make a picture of it and sent it to you so you can see for your self and its so cheap, maybe even better!
DeleteI love this liner but not for my upper lash line as like you said the intensity isn't great but this is AMAZING for your waterline. There is where it lives up to the 24hr claim as when on the waterline it does not budge! I wouldn't use anything else on my waterline now! x
ReplyDeleteOooh I may try that Corrie thank you :) x
Deletei a am so glad i didnt get this been umming and arring about it for months x
ReplyDeleteglad to have been of help :) x
Deletei bought this a while ago and had forgotten about it.. the brush is a bit annoying at times i agree! i did put it on my waterline today and it stayed on for absolutely aggeess! much longer than any pencil would :)
ReplyDeleteA few have said that so I may try it on my waterline and see how it goes thank you :) x
DeleteI wasn't very impressed with this either. I couldn't manage to get a delicate line and it just looked clumsy as an outcome! I much prefer the bourjoir clubbing eyeliner, even though it is the most cringeworthy range they do their mascara and eyeliner is the blackest black and lasts an age!
ReplyDeleteIts so cheap too.
http://helloterrilowe.blogspot.com
I loved the bourjois clubbing mascara so I may give that liner a go :) x
DeleteOh no, it's a shame you didn't get on with it. I've gone through two of these now because it's the only thing that lasts on me a full working day (10-13 hours) with no smudging or flaking! I find it creates a deep black line, but maybe I apply it more heavily. I've never tried high end gel liners though so I can't really compare! x
ReplyDeleteReading your comment really makes me feel like I have a dud haha :)
DeleteI wish this lasted as long or was half as black as the swatches but nope :(
oh well some things just aren't meant to be eh haha!
x
I use the same gel liner, but i kinda like it .I do agree with you on the fading of the colour though. :)
ReplyDeletehttp://lifewidmorbid.blogspot.com/
So glad i'm not alone on that aspect :) x
DeleteShame you didn't get on with this - it's my new favourite! It applies very black on my eyes and lasts so well that it's a pain in the arse to remove!
ReplyDeleteAh i'm so jealous! I wish my results were the same haha! x
DeleteThis had so many amazing reviews online so I decided to buy it, but I didn't think it was worth all the hype :( I'm thinking of investing in one from Bobbi Brown xx
ReplyDeletehttp://theredoneblog.blogspot.com/
Glad i'm not the only one :) I swear by Inglot gel liner it is amazing I promise :) x
DeleteIt's a shame that it fades so quickly! You have beautiful eyes :)
ReplyDeleteagreed :( aw thank you so much :) x
DeleteI really like this, I can actually apply it! Smudging-wise I think it's a sad case of oily eyelids; I have really dry ones and it stays on brilliantly :) x
ReplyDeleteMy oily skin continues to be the bain of my life haha! x
DeleteCompletely agree with your review, I found it to be exactly the same. It slips off in no time and loses the black. I had a better result with the clinique liner pot.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog x
Reading all the comments it seems you and I have drawn the short sticks as the rest have had amazing results :( x
DeleteI'm surprised you didn't like this - I loved it! Here's my review http://mldvs.blogspot.com/2011/12/maybelline-gel-eyeliner.html xxx
ReplyDeleteOff I trot to read that :) x
DeleteI found it way to smudgy as well and at first I though it was just the mascara I was using but after using it a few times I'm quite sure it's the liner. It's such a shame
ReplyDeleteinsertpretentiousurl.blogspot.com
So glad i'm not the only one I found it really horrid overall x
DeleteI found this eyeliner to be the best I've ever brought. I didn't suffer with colour creasing or draining and it remained in place even after I'd slept in it (forgot to take it off after a night out) oops, shame it wasn't good for you :( x
ReplyDeleteHaha the liner you speak off really does seem worlds apart from the one I bought.
DeleteI think I will let it dry out a little and try again :) x
Hello, ive just got back from Milan and over there they had this eyeliner in 3 colours, Black, Brown and Blue so hopefully others colours will be coming to England soon! I wish I had bought them now but for some reason thought I had seen them here! :(
ReplyDeleteI had a sneaky feeling there would be more shades :) aww never mind i'm sure they will filter into the UK soon enough :) x
DeleteI find this gives quite a good solid black line on my eyelids, even when dry, but I do have to use a primer and then my painterly pot and then a powder to thoroughly set my eyelids first or it smudges all over the place, I don't find it as long lasting as some others either x
ReplyDeleteI may try that as it seems to work for others but in all honesty I find any product that takes a great deal of ground work to get it to perform sub par and would rather not...i'm lazy haha! Thanks for the advice though :) x
DeleteYou're not the only one who feels a little weird about frosted glass aha. I actually like it, bu saying that I've not used it loads. I've heard good things about the Inglot Gel Liner, It's such a shame they don't sell them online :( xx
ReplyDeleteHaha it's such a horrid sensation isn't it. Ah don't they :( they sell most of their line online such a shame they don't carry that too! x
DeleteIt is! I feel less weird now haha. Last time I checked they didn't sell online! Thanks for letting me know ha xx
DeleteIt must have sneaked online recently because I found it :) http://www.inglotuk.com/Eyeliner-Matte_Collection_AMC_Eyeliner_Gel.html
DeleteTHANK YOU so much for this review. I use Mac blacktrack gel liner since two and a half years ago and I wanted to try this Maybelline gel because people says it's a good one, but thanks to your advice I guess I will not try it, because I love truly blck eyeliners that lasts all day long without fadding or creasing.
ReplyDeletethanks again. kisses.
You are so welcome :) it has had mixed feedback some say they love it others like myself hate it. I firmly believe if it aint broke don't fix it haha :) x
DeleteI'm so surprised that you do not like this product and from your pictures I can totally see where you are coming from, but personally this is my favourite gel eyeliner the brush is perfect size, once the product has dried it has never creased, it has stayed it's intense black and its also perfect on my waterline.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty Helen i'm a tad annoyed that it seems to work for half it's users and work amazingly so yet when it doesn't it is so poor :(. I wonder if I have struck out with a dud but I will try it on my waterline tomorrow to see if that works out :) x
DeleteI'm really surprised that you didn't like this as I've had great results with this. I have VERY oily lids and this stays put on me even without a primer. It's not as good as my Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner but it's pretty close. Ah well, I guess it doesn't work for everybody.
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked too as it seems to work on everyone eles bar me haha!
DeleteI got this product a while now.. It smudges and creases on my lids too! One thing I like about it is that it's extremely black and the consistency is so smooth and soft! Your packaging is much different to the ones in Aussie here! Thank you for the review!! xx
ReplyDeleteOh what are the ones in Aus like?
Deletegel eyeliner seemed quite daunting when i first picked up a pot, but now i really like it, i just can't find the right one!xx
ReplyDeletewerewolfcubes.blogspot.com
Inglot :) it is the best one I have ever used here is the link and it's actually priced really well too :) http://www.inglotuk.com/Eyeliner-Matte_Collection_AMC_Eyeliner_Gel.html
DeleteI use and love this eyeliner! Its my first gel eyeliner so nothing to compare it to but I find it stays intense and doesn't budge on my (also oily) skin. I actually find it so sturdy it can be a bit of a chore to remove it! The brush is really good but I find it hard to do thin lines with, I need to get a fine liner brush for more natural days, but this is a great brush for a dramatic look! xx

I'm so jealous that it works for everyone else haha :)
DeleteI always use this liner underneath fake lashes...it blends them in well and keeps looks nice and dark throughout the day/night :) I love it! I don't find it budges and I have oily skin too!

Such a shame you didn't like this! It seemed so promising. I was thinking of buying it but I'm not so sure now. Have you tried the MAC one? that's my favourite one at the moment.
ReplyDeletexoxo
I have the make up forever black eyeshadow in a pot - its the best black eyeliner ever!!! x
ReplyDeleteSecrets Of A Trolley Dolly.
Darnit D: It looked so promising in the first swatches but then...wha wha wha. Definitely a pass.
ReplyDeleteHmmm this is interesting. I also own this liner and it smudges like mad if I apply it on my bare lid, however it stays put for about 8 hours if I apply it on top of powder eye shadow. I never had any trouble with the colour fading like you did, despite having quite oily eye lids. The pictures speak for themselves, though...

I bought this when it came out and have used it ever since. It comes out really black on me and lasts near enough all day without moving at all! Must be vary quite a lot on different people because I love it! x
ReplyDeleteI've tried this liner but I always end up going back to my trusty SEVENTEEN Tattoo me liner, it lasts all day with no transfer and is the most intensely pigmented black liner I've ever seen check out my review on it here:
