As a beauty blogger I am lucky enough to try new products on almost a daily basis and although I don't tend to focus on negatives, I do like to share products that have fallen short of the mark every now and then. In my opinion less than glowing reviews are just as important as those full of praise. Saying that, what works for won't necessarily do so for you and vice versa. Anyway here is what I'm less than enthusiastic about and why...
Essence All About Matt Foundation - First of all I personally do rate Essence as a budget brand but this foundation isn't suited to my skin type. It oxidises and turns orange really quickly, tends to create dry patches that I didn't know I had and generally just looks patchy.
Murad Pore Reform Blackhead and Pore Clearing Duo - This broke me out in the worst way, a huge red, itchy rash that took over a week to clear up. Initially I blamed my skin for being a little out of whack but a few friends have also tested this out and experienced less than savoury results. If you have sensitive skin, avoid!
YSL Shocking Mascara - I adore YSL Beaute but this is not one of those products I will be rushing out to repurchase. It is important to keep in mind that I have long, flimsy eyelashes that can become easily weighed down as well as oily eye lids. This mascara smudged, smeared, flaked and failed to deliver length or volume. YSL Baby Doll or YSL Faux Cils Mascara's are my weapons of choice if interested.
Maybelline Big Eyes Liner Duo - A clever concept but poorly executed. Neither end of the liner is well pigmented and is rather firm in texture. I found the liners to pull somewhat on my eyes and there is of course the fact that neither shade stayed put. Do yourself a favour and purchase a black and nude liner from Rimmel and call it a day.
Lush Jungle Solid Conditioner - As you can see from my bar I have more than gave this a fair crack of the whip and yet remain unsatisfied. I bought this hoping that the solid bar would save me money as I go through so much conditioner on a weekly basis. Nope. It literally did nothing. I could not get the bar to produce enough conditioner when wet to benefit my hair and ended up reaching for a bottle of conditioner each wash out of frustration. Yes I even tried chopping it into little pieces, still no luck. Grr.
Hey you can't win them all!
I've heard good thinks about the YSL mascara but its always good to hear different opinions!x

I can't get on with Murad products at all - almost everything I've tried has given me an insanely bad reaction.
ReplyDeleteReally helpful post, some products can be pretty disappointing. I've tried some of the other YSL mascara and have had exactly the same issues with smudging. Similarly the 'great hair argan oil conditioner' made lots of promises but didn't condition my hair at all - definitely won't be buying again! Loved the reviews ! Aprillikes.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy posts like these, it's always good to have all opinions of products good and bad!

I nearly bought that maybelline liner the other day glad I didn't now.
ReplyDeleteThe Murad stuff is scary, my skin still hasn't recovered its awful :'(
Haha, it's a shame when things don't work out as planned :) shocked about the YSL mascara though :P

Good to know about the pore refining serum. I have looked at this one before. You might try the Sephora brand pore refiner. I've been using it for several months and have seen some pretty good results.
ReplyDeleteI'm sad the Maybelline eyeliner didn't work out because it's such a good concept! I still really want to try the "Big Eyes" mascara though even just for the bottom lash wand as I smudge so much using my regular wands on the lower lash line.
ReplyDeleteI have the black Rimmel liner but I find it ends up smudging onto my lower lash line if I tight line with it. I can't tell if I just have super watery eyes or am not applying it correctly because everyone loves them!

My sister got the YSL mascara so I tried some and it was horrible. I didn't know if I had too much on the brush or if I was heavy handed, (I would like to think I know how to put on mascara) but it was so clumpy and way too thick. Not a fan.

My cousins use YSL's Shocking and the absolutely LOVE the mascara! It's quite interesting to read that you had the exact opposite opinion. I probably won't like the mascara either as you said it's quite wet, and I can't use those at all! My favourite is Guerlain's Maxi Lash Mascara.

What a helpful post, will definitely avoid the Murad product as my skin is super sensitive! I love Essence as a brand for their blushes and eyeshadows but I'm not a big fan of their foundations.

I love reading disappointing product reviews, it gives you a fair glance into how a product really is - I recently did one two and it's amazing how many people find the same problems too

I feel the same way about the Jungle conditioner, it's just not a workable concept for my hair! I love YSL Baby Doll mascara so I'm pretty glad I chose that over Shocking x

Great roundup! It's always helpful to hear about the duds as well. I'm feeling the same way about Jungle conditioner. I really want to like it, but no matter what technique I try it doesn't quite do the job.

What a shame these products didn't work for you. I am about to post a similar post on my blog. It feels weird writing about products you don't like, but its important to let people know I guess!

I haven't tried these products before except for the Essence foundation. I like Essence a lot but this foundation also didn't feel good!
ReplyDeleteAgree with you 100% on YSL shocking, I was so pissed off when I spent over £20 and it was crap! All clumpy and like you say it just flakes everywhere!

I had always thought about trying the LUSH conditioner bars, I normally love their stuff but I've heard a few negative reviews, so I'm glad I haven't bothered! Thanks for the tips!

I've always heard such great things about that YSL mascara, but it sounds like it wouldn't work for my lashes as they also get weighed down easily. I also like reading flop posts, it's a great way to learn about stuff I need to stay away from! lol
ReplyDeleteI keep looking at the Maybelline Big Eyes but glad I've not bought it yet! Appreciate the honestly on these products!

Totally agree with you on the Essence Matte Foundation. I found it was so horrible and was orange on me before I'd even had the chance to set it due to my uber pale skin. Didn't keep my skin particularly matte either which is obviously quite important for a matte foundation. At least there's always a million more products to try! haha

I'm a bit wary of trying the Murad Pore refining range now :/// Maybe i can get it in a cheaper try me set one day?
