It's December and if you are anything like me you'll be using the excuse "it's nearly Christmas" to justify everything and anything: from eating a family pack of cookies (I regret nothing), to being a little too slap happy with highlighter. The wise men followed a star to Bethlehem, well that's the kind of glow I'm trying to achieve - a beaming radiance that can be seen from miles away...or maybe not but one that might garner a few admiring glances on the bus. The other thing about the month of December - and Christmas in general - is that you may find yourself running a little low on funds? Well the good news is you can still achieve the aforementioned glow of almost biblical proportions, thanks to the fairly recent launch of the Barry M Liquid Chrome Highlighter Drops.
Highlighting drops and liquid highlighters in general have been big news for the most part of 2017, and I can understand why; they are by far more versatile than their powder counterparts and in my opinion (and experience), a liquid formula is easier to apply. However if you are new to liquid highlighters or have yet to be convinced that they are superior, I do recommend choosing wisely and opting for a budget, easy to source and great option such as the Barry M Liquid Chrome Highlighter Drops.
Liquid highlighters have became fairly stylised in terms of packaging, most will come presented in glass or plastic bottles (Barry M have opted for glass) and feature a pipette to disperse the actual product. Other than the fact, glass doesn't typically travel all that well, I can't say I have particularly strong views about this type of packaging. In the case of the Barry M Liquid Chrome Highlighter Drops it creates a luxe vibe which we don't typically see, nor expect from a product of this price point. To apply, you simply squeeze out a few droplets of the liquid (I recommend doing so on the back of your hand to naturally warm the product) and then apply how you see fit.
As each of the five shades of the Barry M Liquid Chrome Highlighters are so different in tone and vary in finish, I have broken down each option below. The one thing they do all have in common is how they can be worn and applied. If you want to jolt a little added radiance into any liquid skin product, you can mix in a few drops of your favourite shade; or of course you can apply directly onto the complexion as you would any highlighter. As a side note and tip, I have found that if applied using the fingertips, generally speaking the finish is more intense than with a brush or beauty blender.
At First Light - if you enjoy highlighters such as Becca Opal, then this is the budget find you have been waiting for. Barry M At First Light, is a bold, metallic silvered-come-pink, liquid highlighter than frankly looks like molten metal on the skin - subtle this is not. After a few wears, I have noticed that you do have to be careful not to over work this into the skin as it can sheer out and become overly glittery in appearance - basically this is a one and done situation, don't try to apply it in layers.
Beam Me Up - a light and very typical, cool toned champagne shade that is ideal for light to medium complexions. This is one of the more true metallic finish shades in the line up, on the skin this is both stark/bright and almost foil like in finish. If you do decide to mix Beam Me Up into your foundation, I must warn that this will slightly lighten the tone of medium to deep shades.
Precious Pearl - despite appearing to be white in colour, once applied to the skin this takes on an oyster shell pink tone, with a golden shift. This is one of the most universal shades within the line up and one that will look great on most, if not all. The only downside I incurred with Precious Pearl is that it does not layer well, if applied in layers it can dry a little patchy and really heighten any signs of skin texture/dryness. Again as this is a light shade, this could potentiality lighten the overall tone of any foundation if mixed directly into the product.
Moon Potion - this is a more delicate and dare I say refined take on the opalecent (aka unicorn) highlight trend we have been witnessing. Barry M Moon Potion is a super subtle, purple-come-pink toned highlight that contains no shimmer nor glitter particles. In that sense it is both clever and ultimately flattering but on the skin it unfortunately doesn't translate to much, and for that reason alone it is my least favourite shade.
Liquid Fortune - a bright, warm toned, veering on copper, golden shade that frankly looks wonderful on deeper complexions. If like myself you are pale, then you may find this a more difficult shade to work with, or even opt to use it more creatively - maybe as a bronzer or eyeshadow? In terms of formula I found this to be the best, it is gloriously pigmented and a dream to both apply and layer, if you so wish. It is worth noting, that if you have a light skintone, you may find that this will warm and somewhat deepen liquid foundation when combined.
For £6.99 a shade, I'm not sure that they can be beaten? And as you can pick and chose both the shades, and of course how you use them, there truly is an option for every preference and skin tone.
