Products That Deserve a Second Chance

We all have a gaggle of products that we don't love, nor can we bring ourselves to admit defeat and clear them out from our stashes. I guess that we cling onto such items in the hope that one day they will suddenly work and all will be well again. The second chance-rs as I like to call them, not every "meh" product will unveil it's magic after a little persistence but every now and then, the stars align and a new favourite is found. Here is where my patience has paid off dividends and saved a few products from ending up on the scrapheap.

Products That Deserve a Second Chance

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser
There was a time, maybe two or so years ago when all I used was NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser, I swore by the medium coverage yet utter comfortably formulation that left my skin positively glowing. As quickly as I fell in love with the formula, I fell out with it - one day (or so it seems), the once easy to wear texture suddenly settled into every pore, created dry patches that I wasn't aware I had to begin with. It also didn't help that my once perfect colour match had a habit of oxidising and turning orange. In a weird flurry of panic while in Space.NK I purchased a brand new bottle and feel like I have been reunited with a lost love. It gently perfects the surface of my skin, hydrates without feeling heavy and weirdly stays in place without the need for setting powder (I have oily skin). I am obsessed once again.

Kat Von D Lock It Concealer
Sometimes learning to love a product means putting it to use in a less than typical way, for instance more often than not I use concealer to disguise blemishes (something I'm sure most of us do) and will dab it on to targeted areas and blend out. Well the thick texture of Kat Von D's Lock It Concealer is not the easiest to blend, I find it that when used as a stand alone product it dries far too quickly and has a tendency to gather into enlarged pores - far from ideal. I have found that it is the perfect product to mix into foundation (or any other liquid base product) to up the level of coverage, by doing so it glides onto the skin, is by far easier to blend and helps to even out my skin tone. Would I purchase another tube? Probably not but at least this way it is in rotation and not spoiling in a make up bag.

Burt's Bees Deep Cleansing Cream
Typically I lean towards balm or cleansing oils, partly out of habit but also because it is what works best for my skin type and make up habits (I do love a good heavy duty foundation). Recently (and I am accusing the artificial heat as the sole reason) my skin has become a little dry and sensitised, I wanted to find a cleanser that would remove every scrap of make up and leave my skin feeling comforted. I began Googling and reading blogs looking for suggestions and then I remembered I had a creamy, rich cleanser in my stash; a cleanser that I had deemed a little too moisturising in the Summer months but perfect for my currently dry skin. Burt's Bees Deep Cleansing Cream leaves my skin perfectly cleansed with next to no effort and is a dream for parched complexions. If you have oily skin this is not one I would typically recommend.

Products That Deserve a Second Chance

Travalo Atomizer
At first I thought Travalo's were a waste of money, I was almost certain that they would leak and be more hassle than they where worth. I was sent one, many months ago and it lay unused in a cupboard. Bizarrely I was more than happy to cart around a full sized bottle of perfume daily - adding excess weight to an already bursting at the seems handbag and of course running the risk of a glass bottle shattering. One day while lunching with a friend, she pulled out a bright pink Travalo and pretty much sold it to me on the spot; I went home filled mine (so easy to do) with my signature scent and have never looked back. As a matter of a fact I have went on to purchase another two (currently £10 at Superdrug, link above) for other favoured fragrances and do truly think they are beyond convenient.

Products That Deserve a Second Chance

Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish in Happy Birthday
I have a soft spot for Deborah Lippmann nail polishes I really do but the shade Happy Birthday is a polish that has long collected dust in my collection. Why I am none to sure, perhaps it is because I equate glitter polishes as being festive and generally a nightmare to remove, who knows? What I can say is that I have rediscovered glitter nail polish and no bottle is getting more love than Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish in Happy Birthday. Gosh I love it. The bright, multi-coloured flecks dance in the light and weirdly disguise nail polish chips. Yes it is a pain in the butt to remove but when a polish looks this pretty, it really is hard to hold that against it.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Moisturising Stick
My night time lip balm of choice is the original Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm (the one that comes in a glass jar) - the thick, slightly lemon scented balm comforts and nourishes my lips like no other, so when I saw the more day time appropriate Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Moisturising Stick, I immediately clicked purchased. I tried it once, wasn't overly impressed, tried it again and then again and still wasn't blown away. The problem is that this is a lighter version of the Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm and as such shouldn't really be compared to the original. Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Moisturising Stick as a lip balm is actually a well rounded balm: it slicks on to the lips with ease, is lightweight and undetectable in terms of finish and colour, not to mention it truly does hydrate. I can now say I am a fan of both versions of the Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balms.

What products do you have stashed away, promising to return to with an open mind and a new found level of optimism?

The Second Chance-rs That Won Me Over

I'll Forever Look at Hair Ties Differently Now

There is an article doing the rounds on social media about a woman, catching a bizarre and if I am brutally honest, horrific infection; all of which is said to steam from wearing a hair tie on her wrist. This is something I and so many others are guilty of on a daily basis, I even went through a phase of purchasing the oh-so-pretty, hair ties that double up as bracelets - you know the type, thick elasticated bands with a large knot? Well it turns out my attempts at being both practical and fashionable where for nought and maybe cause for panic or at least change.

I'll Forever Look at Hair Ties Differently Now

If you have yet to read Audree Kopp's story (and I don't suggest you Google it if you are about to eat), let me give you the skinny. It all happened with Audree Kopp noticed a small bump on her wrist, a lump that behaved and looked very much like a bug bite; as most would she assumed it would clear up on its own and thought nothing more of it. After a week or so of it becoming more inflamed and prominent, again like any normal person would she visited the doctor and was prescribed antibiotics. Unfortunately said medication did nothing and the lump continued to grow and cause problems, to put her mind at ease Ms.Kopp decided to visit A&E.

It turns out she was entirely right to do so as she needed emergency surgery to lance the abscess which was containing three different types of bacteria and could have resulted in sepsis should it have went untreated. Yikes!

Like most I was utterly curious as to how this could happen; like I said a whole new hair band trend was created purely to be worn on the wrist, surely hair accessories can't pose that big of a risk to our health ? Well the official diagnosis is that the bacteria in question was most likely generated from the hair band, it seemingly seeped in through her pores and hair follicles causing a triple infection. Like I said grim (don't Google the photos until you have at least had lunch) and totally unfortunate but nothing all that common, therefore not something that we should panic about. That being said I truly am glad the poor lady is on the mend!

I'll Forever Look at Hair Ties Differently Now

The whole unfortunate incident has left me thinking, I am now of the opinion that perhaps sporting a hair tie around my wrist is not the best idea after all - well at least not the elasticated, fabric covered types anyway. I mean think about it, they are absorbent therefore goodness knows what may be loitering around your wrist. Gross (or maybe I am simply over thinking it?). One thing I know is that I will be switching over to plastic hair ties; yes I have toyed with them in the past but never really made the commitment. Why? Well truthfully they are by far more expensive option and if I am entirely honest, a little ugly. There I said it.

However they don't retain moisture, are easy to wipe clean and are ideal for heavy, thick hair such as my own as oddly they are more supportive. Don't ask me how but I can pop my hair in a high pony tail with a plastic hair ring and come the end of the day there is no tension head ache - something traditional hair ties can not boast. I also rather like that they don't leave in-dents or creases in my hair and they remove easily without snatching a handful of hairs on their departure; if that is not enough they don't break all that easily and do tend to retail their original shape, even after several uses. Perhaps the real point of this post- hair ties such as Invisibobble are dreadfully uncomfortable to wear on my wrist - the bulky design snags and catches on clothing, the bold design means I'm always aware of it (never out of sight nor mind), thus encouraging me to break the habit once and for all.

Has the recent story regarding hair ties forever changed your hair accessory habits?

Yankee Candle Christmas Gifts 2015

Each year I purchase at least one of the large and often limited edition Yankee Jar Candle (this year I plan on snapping up Yankee Berry Trifle and Cosy by the Fire) but there is so much more to the festive launches, than just jar candles. For instance did you know that Yankee Candle also offer a beautiful cracker filled with mini candles or a keepsake bauble to hang on the tree? No me neither but after one late night shop, I have become a little more acquainted with the less than typical Yankee festive offerings, let me share a few of my favourite sets.

Yankee Candle Christmas Gifts 2015
Yankee Candle Christmas Gifts 2015

Yankee Five Votive Cracker Gift Set £9.99 - link
This year novelty crackers seem to be very much the en vogue thing for a brand to do; not that I am complaining as typically speaking they do seem to be great value for money and a wonderful, little extra festive touch to any dining table. Not only is the Yankee Five Votive Cracker Gift set well presented but it contains five, mini candles in the following scents:  Cinnamon Stick, Candy Cane Lane, Christmas Garland, Christmas Eve and Christmas Cookie - the perfect array of Winter scents that should suit all tastes. I personally think this would be a great secret Santa gift as it is fairly universal and will certainly be appreciated with the long, Winter nights ahead.

Yankee 2015 Keepsake Bauble £7.99 - link
Perhaps you have had a great year, maybe moved home or had a baby and want a less than traditional way to forever remember the last twelve months? Yankee Candle offer the perfect solution with their metal, keepsake bauble; a hollow, mental tin that neatly houses three, full sized Yankee Wax Tarts in the following scents: Angel's Wings, Berry Trifle and Christmas Garland. I rather like that you can use the wax tarts and no-one would be any the wiser and of course that the fragrances are perfectly suited to the season too.

Yankee Twelve Melts Tube Gift Set £15.99 - link
Lastly and perhaps my favourite gift idea of the bunch, has to be the Yankee Twelve Melts Tube Gift Set, which of course contains 12 full sized Yankee Wax Tarts. Admittedly I purchased this from Boots (it is part of the 3 for 2 gift offer) rather than Yankee Candle but you can find the exact same kit via Yankee in a prettier and generally more festive tin. Inside the Yankee Twelve Melts Tube Gift Set you will find the following fragrances: Season of Peace, Angel's Wings, Snow in Love, Christmas Cookie, Spiced Orange, Cinnamon Stick, Christmas Memories, Candy Cane Lane, Cranberry Pear, Snowflake Cookie, Icicles and Christmas Garland. As they are wax tarts you can burn each scent individually or of course combined to create your own custom blend.

If you are stuck for small gift ideas that are a little less typical yet not overly expensive I fully suggest one of the above sets, I have bought a few kits for neighbours and those relatives that are particularly difficult to gift...we all have at least one huh?

It's Winter and I'm pasty, I'm also somewhat broke as I have just about finished my Christmas shopping and when you have a large family that does not come cheap. I do however like to treat myself every now and then (don't we all) and really enjoy self tanning - I know it may seem strange but I enjoy the process and of course the hint of colour. One of my favourite self tanning brands is of course St.Tropez, admittedly one of the more pricier options out there but you can't argue with the results it delivers (nor celebrity clientèle).

St.Tropez Ultimate Tan Trio

A quick word of St Tropez Bronzing Mousse before I share the details of this offer - it is probably one of the most iconic tanning products around and for one reason it works. The mousse is tinted (a light, golden brown) so you can see where you are applying. It dries quickly without streaking (do use a mitt for an even application) and does not leave the skin feeling parched. I find it is best to apply at night and leave to develop while you sleep, I do recommend sleeping in old pj's as the guide colour can stain fabrics. In the morning simply shower as you normally would and hey presto, a beautiful olive tan is yours. To prolong the life of your new golden glow, it is recommended that you moisturise and exfoliate daily - this will stop your tan from becoming uneven and will provide the perfect base for a follow up application should you wish.

To mark Black Friday from the 25th of November to the 1st of December you can purchase the St.Tropez Ultimate Tan Trio for half price at just £20. Inside is three full sized products, including: St Tropez Tan Enhancing Body Polish (75ml), St. Tropez Body Moisturiser (75ml), a bottle of the original St.Tropez Bronzing Mousse (240ml) and to ensure even application there is also a tan appplicator mitt. Basically all you could ever need to create a flawless, long wearing tan (one application typically lasts me a full week) with next to no effort and at a hugely reduced price. Essentially you are paying less for the St.Tropez Bronzing Mousse (240ml) which typically retails for just over £30 and getting the other products free. Perfect for treating yourself or picking up a trio to stash away as a gift.

You can find the St.Tropez Ultimate Tan Trio for £20 via Superdrug (exclusive) - link.

Kneipp Herbal Baths

Winter is the perfect excuse to cast aside twenty minutes, draw yourself a lovely warm bath and unwind - candles optional of course. Well what if you could make that soak in the tub a little more beneficial? What if there was a range of herbal infused bath soaks that have been created to treat various ailments? Tell me more, I imagine would be your answer? One word Kneipp. Kneipp is a holistic brand (originally founded by a Priest back in 1891) that have pretty much a bathing remedy for most of life's problems, well maybe not but they are great for the common cold and preventing a restless night. If this sounds like the very thing you have been waiting for, read on...

Kneipp Herbal Baths

All of the Kneipp Herbal Bath contain natural oils, all of which differ depending on the blend and rather than product endless streams of bubbles, they lightly foam and more often than not tint the water - along with softening the skin, the above combination really does make for a relaxing pre-bed ritual. So what Kneipp Herbal Bath variant should you purchase, I'm so glad you asked. My first answer would be them all but then again we aren't all hoarders so let me help make the decision of whittling it down to just one, a little easier:

Kneipp Herbal Baths

Kneipp Back Comfort Herbal Bath - a warming, almost spicy scented product (similar to the fragrance of the Deep Heat products) that has been created to release tension using Devils Claw plant extract as a powerful anti-inflammatory. The idea is that it will release tension (particularly helpful when you have an achy back) and ease up pain in joints, ideal for sports injury or those weeks when it feels you are never off your feet.

Kneipp Balancing Herbal Bath - this uses Lavender to help your body unwind and relax, it is also great for those who find nodding off at night difficult. I would say that if you dislike the fragrance of Lavender this is one to avoid as it is fairly potent in the scent stakes.

Kneipp Cold Season Herbal Bath - all jokes aside, if I could recommend only one of the Kniepp Herbal Bath treats it would be this. As far as fragrance goes it is fairly typical - Eucalyptus which you'll either love or loathe. The good news is that it does help to clear a stuffy nose and head for that matter, as well as relieving aching muscles. By a bottle now and come your first Winter cold you'll be beyond thankful you did.

Kniepp Enjoy Life Herbal Bath - bright, zesty and lemon scented, this blend has been created to uplift and brighten the dullest of days. Perhaps the least beneficial of the bunch but let's face it we all have days when all we want is a quick pick me up.

Kniepp Pure Bliss Herbal Bath - the most beautiful fragrance with hints of hemp and poppy to create an indulgent atmosphere in even the smallest of bathrooms (yep that would be mine). I find this variation to oddly be the most softening of the bunch, so if you have particularly dry skin this may be one to invest in.

Kneipp Sweet Dreams Herbal Bath - as the name suggests, this is indeed for inducing a great night of sleep. Forget your typical Lavender and Chamomile blend, Kneipp Sweet Dreams Herbal Bath contains Valerian and Hops to soothe both your mind and body, ready for a restful night of slumber. I'm current really struggle with sleep so I can't comment if it works or not just yet but I will revisit as soon as my restless phase passes.

Kneipp Herbal Baths

If you do fancy owning one of each of the above Herbal Baths you can find a miniature collection via Amazon for £9.25 (6x20ml) - link.

Your Winning Formula

This is a sponsored post.

Feeling confident in my own skin has been a long journey and even now I have my days in which I take a knock and need a confidence boost. I'm sure you are the exact same, some days I'm bloated, other days a huge blemish will appear and make me want to hide but it is important to know that everyone (even huge celebrities) have days in which they'd rather run past a mirror than stop and grab a selfie. We are all only human after all.

How do I boost my confidence levels? Sometimes it is really as simple as popping on my favourite and utterly flattering little black dress and doing my hair a little more elaborately than normal. Other days I find that if I drag (that's right I don't enjoy the gym) myself to a spin class or even go for a dip in the community pool, the endorphins of exercise really help to boost my mood, put a spring in my step and as a result leave me feeling like I could conquer the world.

What about faking it, until you make it? Seriously under looked is the power of smiling, it lights up your whole face and may just leave you feeling happier? Like most my teeth aren't as white as I'd like them to be and in the past it has dented my confidence, especially when it is time to pose for photographs. Rather than complaining about the issue, I decided to make a positive change and began trailing Pearl Drops Lasting Flawless White Toothpaste. I mean who doesn't want whiter teeth?

Not only is Pearl Drops Lasting Flawless White Toothpaste utterly affordable but it is gentle, along with gently removing up to 100% of surface stains this daily toothpaste helps to strengthen tooth enamel, is low abrasive and believe it or not helps to prevent cavities. Imagine having whiter teeth in just five days, if you start now they won't be able to stop you grinning in any festive photos in the coming weeks. As an extra confidence booster and of course to show off your pearly whites may I recommend a blue based red lipstick? It will photograph beautifully, enhance the whiteness of your teeth and leave you feeling like a superstar all night.

Sanctuary Relax, Breathe and Let Go Star Gift

I'll be honest in saying that I'm not a huge fan of Black Friday, nor Cyber Monday and find it a little bizarre that the UK has such events considering we don't celebrate Thanksgiving. I'm not complaining (I mean who doesn't love a good sale or two) but I do find it odd how quickly it has been accepted as a "thing" in Britain. None the less timing wise it couldn't be more ideal, for most both days fall after pay day and of course in the run up to Christmas. If you are on the look out for a luxury, bath and body gift, you may want to head over to Boots for this weeks Star Gift.

Sanctuary Relax, Breathe and Let Go Star Gift

The huge and I mean huge, gift set comes in an equally large but visually stunning hat box - a box that could be re-purposed to house other beauty bits and bobs, or even shoes should you wish, one thing that is for sure it is the type of packaging that myself and so many other hoard. If that is not enough there is also a pretty, floral print drawstring bag inside too. Beautiful boxes and bags aside, the contents is what really makes this gift unmissable - if the person you have in mind enjoys a good soak in the tub, they will be forever grateful for this whopper of a gift set.

Sanctuary Relax, Breathe and Let Go Star Gift

Inside you will find four full sized bath and body products, all of which feature Sanctuary's signature scent, coupled with three small votive candles and a inflatable bath pillow. The full details are below but other than hot water and a bath tub, you won't need much else for the best soak of your life.

Full contents:
- Cleansing Burst Body Wash (250ml)
- Gentle Polish Body Scrub (200ml)
- Luxurious Body Butter (300ml)
- Foaming Creamy Bath Soak (250ml)
- 3 x Luxury Signature Votive Candles
- Sumptuously Soft Headband
- Sumptuously Soft Inflatable Bath Pillow

The Sanctuary Relax, Breathe and Let Go gift set is currently Boots Star Gift of the week, meaning until the 2nd of December you can grab the above kit for half price at £22.50.

The Best Budget Rosehip Oil

I'm beyond loyal to Rosehip Oil, I use it daily and will just about thrust a bottle towards anyone who will give me five minutes of their time. To say I regard it as a must try product is an understatement. For years now I have been beyond loyal to Trilogy Organic Rosehip Oil and still rate it highly but when you apply liberal amounts of said oil it can be a pricey affair. After a quick route around I found, Poppy Austin Organic Rosehip Oil on Amazon no less and just £16.49 for a large 60ml bottle. What was more impressive is the fact that it is 100% pure and cold pressed (this method locks in more of the anti-oxidants and in laymen's terms general skin boosting goodness), is responsibly sourced, not to mention hand made. Yup put me down for a bottle I said, wafting my card manically at the screen (that's a somewhat lie, I know my card details off by heart and even if I didn't they are stored on Amazon but you get the point?).

Before I share my main reasons for using Rosehip Oil, let me tell you why Poppy Austin Organic Rosehip Oil has impressed me. First of all, this version of Rosehip Oil seems to be a little lighter - perhaps it is because it contains no additional ingredients or maybe it is down to the way it has been pressed, who knows? All I can say is that it is far less greasy and generally "oily" than others I have tried, as a matter of a fact I somewhat liken it to a dry oil as it is so quickly absorbed by the skin with no traces of residue left behind. This also happens to be the only version of Rosehip Oil I've tried thus far that truly leaves my skin softened, as it is completely natural and a single ingredient product I have been massaging it into my Ezcema, to which it has been gently and nourishing. So far, so good in that aspect. Otherwise Poppy Austin Organic Rosehip Oil is as good, if not better than any Rosehip Oil I have ever used and I will certainly be replacing this bottle once I have drained it in a few months.

The reason Rosehips are often used in skin care is due to their naturally high levels of vitamin A, C and E, they are also rich in fatty acids such as omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, not to mention lycopene (an antioxidant) - which can protect the skin from premature ageing. Further adding to its skin care credentials is the fact that it is one of the few products that penetrates on a cellular level, meaning with continued use you can repair and restore the skin as well as shielding from future damage. The natural concentrate of vitamin A may aid the repair of scars as well as improving the general texture and tone of the complexion. Rosehip is said to be particularly effective against sun and environmental damage, this is due to restorative vitamin C and lycopene. Again if used regularly it may reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; the natural levels of vitamin A and C boost collagen turnover - promoting plumper and smoother skin.

The Best Budget Rosehip Oil

I understand that not everyone looks for anti-ageing benefits, be it due to age or preference. I personally use Rosehip oil daily as a natural anti-inflammatory (Omega's), the natural healing qualities (vit c) are ideal for my often blemish prone skin; it soothes, calms (it can reduce redness), deeply moisturises and nourishes, all the while encouraging my skin to self repair. As a side note it is great on those pesky red marks (or any unwanted hyper-pigmentation) left behind from blemishes, not to mention it eradicates any tight or itchiness that scarring in general can cause. For this reason it is great for sunburn, itchy scalps and stretch marks - preventive or restorative.

I'm in no way a skin care expert but I do think that everyone should try and implement Rosehip Oil into their nightly routine, you'll be surprised at just how quickly you'll become hooked. As I mentioned above, if typical, heavy and dare I say greasy oils aren't for you, I can't recommend Poppy Austin Organic Rosehip Oil enough.

The Best Budget Rosehip Oil I Have Found

Adult Acne Update

So earlier this year my acne returned and with a vengeance (you can read all the other posts in this series here - link), admittedly it was something I had battled with in my teens but it did settle down to occasional blemishes rather than full break outs. My skin has never been perfect and I doubt it ever will be, all I have ever strived for is "normal" - no huge lumps and bumps, no pitted scars and no need for medication (in the acne sense at least). I promise this post is less whiny than the opening paragraph lets on...

As I've mentioned in past posts I was prescribed antibiotics for my skin - Tetracycline and Differin, one is an oral antibiotic which left my skin sensitised by the sun and the latter is a topical cream that irritated my skin. If I am entirely honest I would most likely have put up the adverse effects had my skin cleared up (I believe that anti-biotics have their place in medicine and for some they will be the very thing needed to clear acne), it of course didn't. I was then prescribed Lymecycline, again it didn't agree with my skin and despite three months of my best efforts, my skin was just as inflamed an irritated as ever. I was then offered Roaccutane.

Adult Acne Update

Roaccutane is fairly controversial within the treatment of acne, it is often seen as a last resort and one that is not to be taken lightly. A good GP will explain that Roaccutane will not be for everyone due to numerous reasons, and should you be prescribed such drug, expect countless tests and monitoring. For me the health implications outweighed the benefits and I decided that it wasn't a risk I was willing to take. I should mention that Roaccutane has been the skin saving grace for many others, many of which happen to be my friends so I am not against it as an option, it just wasn't the best route of action for me. Basically do your research before agreeing to anything (medical, natural or anything for that matter), which I'm sure is the step of action most will take in regards to any medication.

The more I thought about my skin, the more I decided that I didn't want to be on anti-biotics of any type (each one seemed to disagree with me internally so it did seem pointless) and sought out more natural remedies. After what seems like an endless research, I read that Saw Palmetto can be helpful in the treatment of acne, as can limiting or cutting out dairy. Yep after a visit to a Dermatologist, a long chat with the green light to implement both changes, here we are six months later.

Is my skin completely blemish free? Nope but it is more the occasional break out (and mostly hormonal at that) and completely manageable, more importantly the blemishes don't scar or pit and I somewhat feel in control of my skin. Along with ditching dairy (I do still eat the odd piece of chocolate etc), I ensure that I drink 2 litres of water and at the request of my dermatologist I take vitamin E, C and Omega 3,6 and 9 supplements. Apparently combined vitamin e and c will encourage the skin to heal quicker and Omega 3, 6 and 9 are natural inflammatories. Again this is not medical advice so do talk this step over with a professional before rushing into your local Boots store and stocking up. I also hate to be this guy but I also recommend taking any acne skin care advice read on the internet with a pinch of salt, very few are experts (myself included) and you can not beat professional advice and guidance.

Adult Acne Update

I've also made a few skin care changes, none of which are particularly expensive nor difficult to implement. I now only cleanse using a cleansing oil (solid, liquid or balm) as the oil glides over my skin, doesn't require any tough scrubbing actions and more importantly doesn't disturb any healing blemish. If I have a blemish that is in the midst of healing, I take care not to disturb the "head" (grim I know) by gently cleansing around the area, with a soft facial cloth and never sticking my face under the shower. I'm also a huge fan of Rosehip Oil as a skin care treatment; it helps to rejuvenate the skin and can aid the fading process of existing scarring and red marks (hyper-pigmentation). Again nothing here is set in stone and just a break down of what works for me.

If you are suffering from acne (adult or not) I do urge you to seek professional help, don't suffer in silence! If you read the comment sections within my previous posts, you will see that there are several other people with the same problem, most of who have kindly shared their experiences on what worked for them and what didn't. If anything I found the comment sections to be the most helpful element of this series (you can read all the other posts in this series here - link) - especially the links to other posts of a similar nature.

I'm by no means a skin care expert but if there are any questions I can help with do feel free to ask below or drop me an email and I'll be happy to help as best I can.

all I want

Believe it or not, I very seldom receive beauty gifts from my family or friends and to be honest I don't blame them at all for side stepping the beauty aisles. If I find it impossible to recall what I own and what I don't, what chance do they have? Rather they tend to surprise me with DVD box sets (I am quite the sitcom aficionado), pj's and random cat related objects - all things I love and truly do want. If they were to purchase me a beauty item or two, this is the direction I would point them in...

1, Tom Ford Private Blend Blush Santal Eau de Parfum - I call this the one that got away, every time I have been close to purchasing this I get blinded by Tom Ford's latest launch. One day, this soft, creamy floral scent shall be mine.

2, Diptyque Amber Candle - For a few years now I have been treating myself to Diptyque Figuier Candles but recently I have found myself more and more temped by the richer notes of Diptyque Amber - a warming, unisex blend that is utterly more-ish. I doubt I'll leave Space.NK empty handed come my next visit.

3, Becca Opal Highilghter - I own a few Becca highlighters, including Champagne Pop but the one I have yet to track down is Opal. I know the light, shimmering golden finish isn't exactly ground breaking and I probably have a few similar products in my stash but the heart wants, what the heart wants.

4, Smith & Cult Nail Polish - Can you say obsessed? I own one Smith & Cult Polish and while painting my nails I finally had an a-ha moment. As you may know I only use 5 free and Vegan nail polishes which somewhat limits my choices, I longed for a hard wearing yet somewhat luxury formula and brand - easier said done. Smith & Cult are my nail polish Knights in armour, beautiful shades, a great formula, none harmful and kind to animals. Trust me when I say like Pokemon, we should collect them all.

5, Christian Louboutin Lipstick - At this point I don't even care what shade, I just want a point gilded gold lipstick come weapon but that £60 price tag...ouch.

6, Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation - Do I need another foundation? Nope, not even close but the rave reviews of this formulation have swayed me and convinced me it may be the cure to all of my skin woes. It probably isn't but I can't stop lingering over the order now button.

7, Laura Mercier Eau Gourmande Perfume - If you have ever as much as sniff tested the Laura Mercier Amber Vanille product range you will want a bottle of this scent. A sweet, vanilla essence that is warmed up with notes of Amber - it truly is delicious.

8, Charlotte Tilbury Ecstasy Blush - Another product that has topped my wishlist for quite some while, as there is no Charlotte Tilbury counter in my home town I have yet to see this is person, hence the delayed purchase. I am thinking that it is pretty difficult to make an ugly Coral blush so maybe I should just take the chance?

9 & 10, Clinique Colour Pop Lipsticks in - By now you have probably guessed that I enjoy coral toned make up items? I find coral lipstick so easy to wear and surprisingly flattering. The Clinique Colour Pop lipstick range is easily one of my favourite, non-matte formulations and I am determined to purchase the shades Melon Pop and Fab Pop before the year is over. I'm also looking at Poppy Pop and Sugar Pop - if you have tried either, do let me know your thoughts.

This is obviously just that - a wish list and just for fun , I would not ask nor expect anyone to purchase me a £330 bottle of perfume. If I am entirely honest I will most likely purchase the majority of the above items for myself because I am a sassy, independent lady who can't say no to a little retail therapy.

If money was no object, what would be on your Christmas wish list?

Oribe Gold Lust Oil

I have a less is more approach to hair care, other than shampoo, conditioner and the odd blast of dry shampoo I am fairly low maintenance - unfortunately my laissez faire attitude can result in split ends and generally wild looking hair. I will only entertain products that are light weight and easy to use, I don't have the energy nor patience to faff around with heat or detailed instructions (you should see me build Ikea furniture, it really is a treat). I was recently gifted a bottle of Oribe Gold Lust Oil and have to say I am impressed, the price tag not so much but as you only need a tiny amount I guess it is somewhat justifiable.

Oribe Gold Lust Oil

Oribe Gold Lust Oil is a light, silken, non-greasy hair oil that has been created to deeply nourish and hydrate the hair - it contains a blend of: jasmine, edelweiss flower, lychee, sandalwood, cassis, bergamot and argan oil extracts (it smells incredible) to inject moisture directly into the hair shaft. Due to the lightness of the oil, it is able to hydrate without weighing down the hair or leaving behind any sticky/greasy residue. Rather it offers a shiny, natural coating that tames, frizz, flyaway hairs and with continued use it can help to repair damaged hair structures - nothing beats a good trim though.

Oribe Gold Lust Oil

If that is not enough, Oribe Gold Lust Oil is a great multi-tasker it offers thermal protection against heated tools such as curling tongs and hair straighteners, reduces drying time and is safe to use on colour treated hair. If anything I'd say it helps brighten my hair colour a little rather than dulling it down and does aid the combing out of knots, pretty much the hair oil that keeps on giving.

As mentioned above, all of the aforementioned benefits would be lost on me if Oribe Gold Lust Oil required a huge list of directions to follow, in order to get the best results. Nope, rather all you have to do is work through the ends of damp hair and style as normal. Perfect for all those fellow low maintenance hair care advocates out there.

50 Winter Beauty Blog Prompts

The suddenly dark days of Winter, that all so quickly turn into evenings have hampered my creativity (and photo taking opportunities too) and I am sure I am not alone? I think sooner or later in the Winter, we all hit a little lull and would like a little blog prompt or two? Well look no further I have rustled up 50 Winter ready blog ideas that may help spark a little inspiration, and much like before I am not promoting the purchase of new products solely to create content.

50 Winter Beauty Blog Prompts

Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you can, I fully recommend waiting until the festive period is upon us before replacing or purchasing any beauty tool. Why? Well it is from late October onwards that all the value brush sets begin popping up in store, why wouldn't you want more bang for your buck? For all those who are fans of Real Techniques brushes (and I'm guessing that is around 99.9% of us?), your luck is in for just £20 you can be the proud owner of the Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set - a kit of five, full sized brushes and a dinky clutch bag. The perfect gift for any beauty lover, even if said person happens to be yourself.

Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set
Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set

I've seen a few reviews and it seems that the free clutch bag hasn't been all that well received. Having spoke to both Sam and Nic Chapman I can tell you that the idea was to add a little something extra to make the kit more gift-able, the clutch hasn't been designed to hold your daily essentials but rather is to be seen as a mini brush bag. Personally I'm with the masses in saying that I won't be using the clutch bag but do think it is a nice gesture.

Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set

Let's be honest you purchase a kit like the Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set, for one reason only and that is to grab discounted brushes. This nifty kit not only includes three core brushes that most of will benefit from having duplicates of but two additional brushes as well. The full line up is as follows:

Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set
Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set

Real Techniques Multi Task Brush: a large fluffy brush that can be used to apply all types of powder and is ideal for blending out harsh lines when contouring or as a quick option for covering large areas of the face, i.e when applying setting powder.

Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set
Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set

Real Techniques Tapered Foundation Brush (kit exclusive): a dense, stubby brush that has been created for applying liquid foundation but I do find it can be a little time consuming. It is however ideal for using in conjunction with cream blushes, contour and highlighting products.

Real Techniques Angled Highlighter Brush (kit exclusive): As the name suggests this is the ideal brush for applying a light dusting of highlighter, it is also wonderful for setting the under eye area.

Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush: a fluffy, somewhat tapered brush that can be used to pack on eye shadow (cream or powder) and of course, is ideal for blending out harsh lines.

Real Techniques Finer Liner Brush: a great brush for precise application of gel or liquid eye liner.

I do think that the quality of the Real Techniques Deluxe Holiday Gift Set brushes is great. My only gripe is that my Fine Liner brush isn't cut quite as well as the stand alone version but then again I may have a dud? However as it works out to be £4 a brush, I do think this kit is quite the steal and ideal for those looking to grab a duplicate brush or two, try the brand or to gift someone just starting out in the world of make up.
