In the recent weeks I saw many a review of the new Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils crop up on a number of my favourite blogs, with may heralding them as a great dupe for the NARS Satin and Matte Lip Pencils. At £4.99 a pop you didn't have to tell me twice and off I trotted to my local Superdrug to pick up a few shades. Oddly I ended up snagging the three shades I wanted in Morrisons - seems the neutral shades are more popular in Glasgow and more difficult to source.
The Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils are a little smaller and stubby in shape and size compared to the NARS Matte Lip Pencils. They are also made out of wood rather than almost plastic casing of the NARS pencils. I don't know if anyone has tried The Body Shop Concealer Pencils but that is exactly what the Maybelline version reminds me of - only tinted and for your lips of course! For the sake of trial, I did sharpen one of the Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils and they do pretty easily as long as you have a large enough sharpener. What I will say is prepare to loose a substantial amount of product each time you decide to do so,
According to Boots (online anyway) there is 9 shades of the Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils to choose from. Like I said above the neutral shades was all that really interested me were the neutrals namely three shades: 140 Minimalist - a light, yellow undertoned pink that reminds me a less glossy version of MAC Angel Lipstick. 210 Keep it Classy - a deep, red toned plum which looked more like a deep pink nude under the store lights, had I realised the true shade I doubt I would have purchased this. Lastly I have 630 Nude Perfection - a light, yellow toned tan shade that is not worlds apart from MAC Velvet Teddy. Next on my list is Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencil in In With Coral.
Now don't get me wrong for £4.99 the Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils are a complete snip, you can use them as a stand alone lip liner due to the firmer texture or of course line and fill the lips in full. Compared to the NARS Lip Pencils I do have to be entirely honest in saying that they are a little drier in texture and can tug somewhat on the lips. Unlike the NARS versions this pencil lacks the creamy texture and if you suffer from dry lips you may want to apply a little lip balm before or after each use. The good news is that the pencil itself won't dry out your lips and the slightly waxier and firmer texture does mean that the pencils stay on the lips that little longer. As you can see from my images that the Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils do not lack in pigmentation and in terms of wear as a solid lip colour I achieve around 2 hours of true colour before fading takes over. This includes eating and drinking so all in all a great little pencil even if it isn't a complete NARS dupe.

I can't believe how these companies just keep copying each other...why can't they just let one company have the monopoly on one product...that is so greedy...I get that the new trend is lip pencils but to be honest, very soon it is going to be something completely different.

I have the shade nude perfection and I love it! It's the only colour I've been wearing in my lips for a few weeks now but it also makes a great base for other lipsticks! Great review xxx

I've heard so much about lip pencils in the blogging world recently, I'm so tempted to try one! At such a good price might give these a whirl just to see how I get on. Will have to keep in mind your advice about using balm though as I have quite dry lips!

I bought all of these last week and have only tried one so far. I like the opaqueness of the colour, but I agree, they can be somewhat drying and aren't exactly a cinch to apply. I do love lip pencils/crayons, though, so these are right up my street.
ReplyDeleteI for one am not a fan of lip pencils at all. I purchased a few here and there and was so unimpressed with them!

Drying? Well, I definitely can't use these then. My lips are susceptible to being super dry and flakey, so I much prefer a lip colour that is moisturising.
ReplyDeleteFab review! Thank you!

They look gorgeous! :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way I'm also new to this world of blogging, so it would mean a lot to me if anyone checked out my blog? Thanks:)

I love the second shade,I'm a huge fan of lip pencils so always looking for more. I'm glad they're having a minute personally because I can't stand all the crayons that were hyped up last year!

Your lips look pretty. I prefer lip pencils more than lipsticks because they stay longer and the lips look more beautiful!

I'm loving these myself at the mo! So awesome for the price :)
ReplyDeleteand beauty or something.
I'm not sold on the lip pencils but I just wanted to say thank you for including on the lip swatches in your review - I always find it so much easier to judge products when I can see them used in the way intended, rather than just swatched on the skin.
ReplyDeleteI might have to try these, if only because they're a lot cheaper than the NARS ones (which are slowly bankrupting me). The nude is a lovely colour. It's a shame about the formula though.
ReplyDeleteThese look like gorgeous shades but I much prefer the packaging of the Nars pencils, I might give them a go but I'd definitely opt for Nars if I had the budget. x

I can't wait until these are launched where I live because they look really nice! I've heard a few complaints here and there, but overall they sound great for the price.

I love these colours, they're so pretty! Looks like it would be good to pick up a couple to add a bit of versatility to any look at that price.

I swatched these in store and they do seem a bit dry, some more than others. Such a shame as I love the colours. X

The red shade looks beautiful! I bet a lip gloss over it would look perfect. ^_^

I have Nude Perfection because, like you said, it looked like a dupe for Velvet Teddy, but I'm not looking forward to sharpening it!! x
