I'm not going to beat around the bush - Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balms are only okay. They aren't the worst lip balm out there by any stretch of the imagination but the hype surrounding such brightly colour lip salves is vastly undeserved. I feel exactly the same way about the Maybelline Electro Baby Lips. Sorry Maybelline I do love you, I swear.
What is surprising is just how soft and almost liquid like this seemingly hard balm feels on the lips, I expected such a firm to texture to tug and pull at the lips but it does the opposite it glides on with such ease with a light texture. Maybelline claim that Baby Lips offer 8 hours of hydration and I'm afraid that it is not case it is closer to 2 hours, as long as the balm is on the lips the skin will remain moisturised but once it wears off all the benefits tend to vanish. For a product that costs less than £3 the ingredients are pretty substantial and include vitamin E, aloe, honey, shea butter and in some instances an SPF of 20. However I should mention that all of the Baby Lips contain petroleum and in a pretty large quantity which would explain why there is no real lasting benefits of applying this particular lip balm or any petroleum based balm for that matter. The main problem with Petroleum is that it tends to only mask the problem of dry skin/lips with a barrier of hydration and over time said ingredient can suck out extra moisture from the skin/lips making the problem worse not better.
If you are expecting a new formula from the Maybelline Electro Baby Lips Lip Balms you will be disappointed. Yet if you have simply became bored of the standard Baby Lips line up and what a new scent or tint to add to your collection this will be right up your alley! The Electro Baby Lips line up includes four new shades and fragrances: Berry Blast - on the lips this gives a berry like stain and has a sweet, artificial berry type scent, Oh! Orange - as you can imagine this gives a light orange tint and of course has an orange fragrance. Pink Shock - a bright pink slick of colour with what I make to be a strawberry scent. I'm a little undecided on that aspect. Lastly we have Strike A Rose which apparently has a rose fragrance, mine again rings of Strawberry and offers a light almost coral pink slick of colour. This is the prettiest of the bunch if you ask me. A word of warning please don't be fooled by some Google swatches, the Maybelline Electro Baby Lips are not intensely pigmented. For decent colour pay off you would have to really layer on the balm which would in turn become thick and uncomfortable.
Maybelline Electro Baby Lips £2.99 each via Superdrug and on a buy one get one half price offer too - link.
I feel the same about these sheer tinted lip balms that are popping up everywhere. Really do not get the hype.
ReplyDeletegreat review! they look awesome but yeah there are some really unrealistic swatches out there x thanks for such an honest insite into these x Im a huge fan of the baby lips formula and like the sound of the orange one x

I just use Baby Lips as a way to get a quick slick of colour on those days where you can't //really be bothered. The purple and orange look especially great to me for those kind of days!

Wow these were sitting in my basket amongst other things, and have swiftly been removed! How disappointing :( I really don't understand why they're so hyped?! xx
ReplyDeleteI love all of the colors they are really pretty! xx Tilsie (Tilsie.blogpsot.se)
ReplyDeleteLove all the hues!! x

I'm a big fan of Baby Lips - they're a nice way to add a subtle bit of colour and they smell nice! I have two of the Electro lips now but, as you said, I bought them 'to add a new shade' rather than because I thought they would be totally different, so I'm not disappointed at all. I got what I expected: new shades. But yeah, I can totally see that if you bought into a lot of the hype these could be really surprising and a big let down. :)
ReplyDeleteI recently purchased the peach Baby Lips balm and, although smells nice and looks quite pretty on the lips, I was otherwise very unimpressed - definitely seemed to dry my lips in the long run rather than nourish them! Glad it wasn't a massive expense, I'll stick to my Reve de Meil lip balm from now on as it's the only thing that seems to work for me x

I bought a few of the original Baby Lips because they are so inexpensive, but yeah, they aren't that amazing, I don't really get the hype either. I won't be getting any of these.
ReplyDeleteI saw these in Superdrug today but after trying one of the original ones and not really loving it I won't be buying into the hype with these. Thanks for the informative review!

I love these balms. The colours come out really pigmented on me, I actually prefer them to the originals. I agree that they don't hydrate your lips for 8 hours but I haven't found any balm that does. Nice honest review.

I'm so glad you explained why baby lips made dry lips worse! Over the winter I bought some baby lips and was so disappointed, it made lips ten times worse and I had no idea why! This makes so much sense now, thank you I never understood the Babylips hype, everyone raves about them and to me they leave no real colour on the lips and definitely aren't very hydrating.
ReplyDeleteThe colours are so beautiful. Looking forward to trying these bad boys myself.

Nice shades, although I find the baby lips very average

I won't be rushing out to buy this new release. Bought a few of the original baby lips & wasn't wowed by them at all

I agree completely. The initial craze persuaded me to head out and buy one when they very first hit the UK, but after a couple of uses,I was left disappointed. I'd much rather a carmex anyday!

These do not appeal to me. I find the packaging and idea and bit rubbish and cheap!

I've never really got the hype around the Baby Lips but they do look nice, I just.. Don't know, I think I've seen more bad reviews than good :( xxx

I've never tried baby lips and I'm shocked at how they turn out on the skin. They look so vibrant. Such a shame. Fab review on your behalf though, wouldn't expect anything less ;o) x
ReplyDeleteEveryone used to raves about the Maybelline baby lips and then it kinda dies down, now no one care ~ hahah I still love them thou :) I own Pink Shock ~

I am such a huge Maybelline fan, it's probably my favourite cheaper brand, but I completely agree. These are one of those things that is just so hyped up I couldn't help but feel disappointed. I feel the same hype surrounds the EOS lip balms, but I haven't been able to get my hands on one of those yet to see.

Everyone's different I guess - I love baby lips! I'm a bit of a hoarder though, and to be honest I hardly ever wear the electro collection (yes I have them all... shame on me!) I just look at how pretty they are! My faves and the ones i do wear all the time are the Dr Rescue baby lips which we still don't have in the UK yet :( The US are even on to the next big thing - Crystal baby lips, and of course, I cannot wait to get my hands on those! Hoarder for life :)

I also love Maybelline's products but I was a bit disappointed with the original baby lips. Didn't find them very moisturising, therefore, didn't quite get all the hype. Definitely not buying these.
ReplyDeletespeakingbeautyuk.blogspot.co.uk/
I like the colours but I'm not sure they're worth spending even that little money to be honest... I still need to use up all the original ones!

I had a baby lips for my birthday and am still yet to try it. Seen so many good things about it though, but its nice to see a real honest opinion :) x

I was actually standing in the shop today considering buying these and after reading this I'm glad I didn't!
ReplyDeleteNice review :) xxx
I quite like the corally pink colour, but like you say these aren't anything special. Loads of brands seem to be churning out similar things now though! xx
ReplyDeleteA Little Lucy
considering how bright they appear, you'd think they'd show up a bit more! x
