I initially bought the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette when it first launched in 2012 (doesn't that seem like forever ago?) and wasn't all that enamoured with it. I tried it, tested it, swatched it, reviewed and then sold it on with no regrets whatsoever until recently. A year or so ago matte eyeshadow wasn't my thing I was all about a light shimmery base of colour but now I like to add definition to my eyes and do tend to stick to neutral mattes, when it comes to such formulations you really can't beat the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette. The inevitable happened I repurchased the palette which I almost never, ever do...
The Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette shares similar packaging to that of NARS in that it features a rubberized plastic finish. The Naked Basics palette is teeny tiny - smaller than an iPhone but it does have a sizable mirror and six pans of eyeshadow which fits comfortably into the palm of a hand, it truly is the perfect to go size.Design wise this is very well thought out and is perfect for travel as it is small, secure and can take
a knocking without smashing the eyeshadows and the mirror allows for on the go application.
In the past this was initially dubbed as an all matte which isn't fully true as one shade is shimmer based but hey close enough!Only four out of the six shades are exclusive to this palette: Foxy was featured within Naked 2 and is available to purchase as an individual shade,Walk of Shame (W.O.S) was an exclusive to the Build Your Own Palette system prior to the Naked Basics palette launch.I quickly want to state that I find Urban Decay eyeshadows to be some of the better pigmented eyeshadows out there and find them a pleasure to work with - they blend, build and wear wonderfully so but to get the most from each shade I do recommend using a primer before application. I can hand on heart say that if I wasn't a beauty blogger forever on the search for the next great thing that I would most likely only wear Urban Decay eyeshadows and that is the truth. Lipsticks I'm forever a MAC girl but you knew that ha!
Venus - A light frosty off white with slight yellow tinge, soft to the touch, this reminds me of a softer formulated MAC Nylon Eyeshadow. Depending on your preference this can double up as a face highlighter too - think NARS Albatross.
Foxy - A light, cool toned yellow beige/ivory, velvety soft but the shade can lead ashen on deeper skin tones. I like to use this all over my lid to cancel out any red tones. It makes a great matte base and although it doesn't appear to be overly pigmented in my swatches it is a different matter when applied to the eyelids.
Walk of Shame (W.O.S) - A light, slightly warm toned nude, another shade that appears less pigmented than it is but much like Foxy it actually presented no problems and makes a great all over wash of colour on lid but again can become ashen the darker your skin tone.
Naked 2 -This is a cool toned , grey based brown which is the perfect transitional shade for blending out other eyeshadows or it can be used to contour, be that in the crease of your eye or to create cheekbones. There are no problems what so ever with pigmentation but I did find the shade to lean more
grey than it appears in the pan. I use this on my brows too, yep really!
Faint - A mid tone, cool brown, again this is provides great colour pay off and is a great shade to add definition to the eye socket. This would also make a wonderful brow shade for those who have light to medium brown hair.
Crave - Oddly Crave is an almost black with a brown leaning than a true black hue which it does appear to be in pan form. Unsurprisingly this is the shade in the palette that packs the biggest punch in terms of pigmentation. When applied I find it to be less harsh than it appears, a fabulous option for those who find true black shades a little overwhelming for everyday wear.
The million dollar question, do you need the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette? Ask yourself would you use the above shades daily and would you like to able to cart around one dinky little palette rather than several shades? If the answer is yes then this could be the best £20 you spend. I've been asking myself where do we see Urban Decay Naked going next - are they fresh out of neutral palettes? Personally I'd like to see a brow palette wouldn't you?
