Despite being one lazy lady when presented with liners be they for the lips or eyes I will normally always go for one you have to sharpen manually rather than a twist up style pencil. Why? I like a really sharp and firm point for precise lines which is something I find the twist up variant to lack. Well Smashbox have only went and reinvented the wheel haven't they with their new Smashbox Always Sharp Eye Liners - a twist up mechanical pencil that is self sharpening pretty cool non?
How do they work I hear you cry, well the cap contains a sharpener of sorts that remoulds the tip of the liner when replaced and twisted. It is something that you can do on the go and means the pencil always has a sharp point ready to use. Despite the sharpener being in the cap I have not noticed any mess or waste for that matter which is rather important if used as a travel option.
Within the UK there is eight shades of the Smashbox Always Sharp Eye 3D Liners and another eight shades within the waterproof formula to choose from. I have the 3D line which seems to be made up of metallic hues - I have the shades 3D Gemstones which is a purple toned brown with tiny flecks of silver glitter and 3D Sparks which is an olive tinged black with golden glitter flecks. I have to be truthfully and state that I have no idea why Smashbox have dubbed the liners 3D.
The Smashbox Always Sharp Eye 3D Liners do have a slightly drier texture than I am used to but they don't tug or pull on the eyelids and are comfortable enough to use on the waterlines. The glitter particles are rather fine so they don't irritate my eyes which are somewhat sensitive. Although I am not a fan of glitter the Smashbox Always Sharp Eye Liners formula is not to be faulted, once applied you have a few seconds before it dries down and locks meaning it won't budge even on the oiliest of lids. The only downside is that the formulation of the Smashbox Always Sharp Eye Liners is rather soft so drawing precise lines can be a little troublesome and also due to the soft texture I found it wore off rather quickly (maybe after an hour of wear) on my waterline but for a liner on the lids I can not fault it.
