I want to begin this tutorial of sorts by stating that unless you constantly burn candles or wax tarts investing in the supplies needed to make your own may not be cost effective. It will probably surprise very few to learn that my favourite shows growing up were Art Attack and Blue Peter and I'd spend many an afternoon turning cardboard tubes and empty bottles into something utterly useless but my gosh did I have fun. In the end I ended up at Art School of sorts and to this day I still own more glitter than an ordinary person could ever find a use for.
Making your own wax tarts is really easy...well once you own all the correct tools and supplies.
What I tend to use:
An old pot
An old wooden spoon
A small plastic cup to measure haphazardly
A silicone mold - I got mine from eBay -link but check out the pound shop.
Wax Flakes - I use Eco soy wax as it has a cleaner burn and again bought it from eBay -link
Scented Oil - again an eBay - link purchase but you can use natural oils.
Wax Dye - Good old eBay again - link
1,Basically I measure out enough wax to fill however many tarts I am making of one colour or scent, in the pot using the wooden spoon I gently stir over a gentle heat until the wax flakes melt and to that I add a small cut of wax dye.
2, I continue to stir until said chunk dissolves and all of the wax is of a solid colour and then add one cap full of scented oil and again stir a few times to dispense the scent all the way throughout the mixture.
3, All that is left is to pour the liquid into the mold's and allow to cool which takes a few hours at most. To speed up the process you can put the mold outside which depending on the weather can result in the tarts being ready to use within half an hour! As a side note I do use like to keep an ice tray handy for any excess wax that way I can rustle up a mini tarts, they may not look pretty but hey they all burn the same.
Being a slight freak I make my tarts in batches so I can colour coordinate them, all my green tarts are green apple scented and my purple tarts are "Princess Type" basically a dupe for Vera Wang's Princess.
Is this something you enjoy doing or will you be trying it out for yourself?
