It is inevitable that the new Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm Stain's would end up being compared to
the famous Clinique Chubby Sticks so today i'm going to do exactly just that!
Packaging
This is the one thing I have an issue with, they are almost identical!
The only thing separating them is the cap colour, if you remove Revlon's cap
and replace it with one from Clinique the resemblance is uncanny!
I get that to allow the product to perform to the best of it's ability Revlon had to make them into chunky
sticks and that would in turn draw comparisons to the Chubby Sticks
but surely there must have been a less obvious way to packaged said pencil,
but surely there must have been a less obvious way to packaged said pencil,
couldn't they have tapped into the quilted or black packaging they are known for?
Winner - Clinique as it was the original.
Shade Choices
Clinique now have 16 shades of their Chubby Sticks and the new kid on the block only has 12
but given that they are newly launched and have time to expand where as the Chubby Sticks originally
launched with just 8 shades expanding with another 8 new shades this month.
I would say they are on equal grounds here, i'd perhaps give the lead to Revlon but we will have to see if all
12 shades do in-fact make it to the UK shores.
Winner - Tie both have this well covered.
Formula
It's hard to truly compare the two as Clinque do not market the Chubby Sticks as lip stains
where as Revlon do and rightly so as the formula does stain the lips wonderfully.
What I will say is that compared to Clinique the Revlon counterparts feel slightly dry and tug slightly on the lips and the balm element fades fairly quickly leaving you with a stain lacking the moisture barrier.
Clinique Chubby Sticks on the other hand truly feel like a lip balm and offer more hydration that lasts
with a light dose of colour that does not stain the lips.
with a light dose of colour that does not stain the lips.
I feel that most of us assumed that the Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm Stains would be firmer versions
of the now famous Lip Butters only in pencil form and that is where we are becoming disappointed
as they are not at all comparable, should they have been firmer Revlon Lip Butters
then I do feel they would have been on par with the Clinique Chubby Sticks in terms of hydration and comfortability factors alas they are not and aforementioned point is useless.

In terms of pigmentation both are pretty well matched obviously as the Revlon formula is a stain type
product it does benefit from a longer wear time.
Also the Revlon stains have a funny mint scent that I do not like at all, Clinique is scent free.
Winner - Clinique, offers more moisture and is generally more comfortable to wear.
Value for Money
Although I do not have the exact price for the Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm Stains
I can say with 100% certainty that they will not be priced at £16 like the Chubby Sticks -
I would be shocked if the Revlon Just Bitten Balms/Stains retail for anything more than £7
so the Revlon version will undoubtedly be the purse friendly option.
Also Revlon tend to do special introductory prices and the stores that sell them often
have offers going on that include them in the sales such as 3 for 2's etc.
In terms of weight the Clinique product has slightly more at 3g and the Revlon version is 2.7g
so not really all that much of a difference.
Winner - Revlon as you get roughly the same amount of product for what I will imagine to
be less than half the price of the Clinique product.
Round Up
In truthfulness I prefer the Clinique Chubby Sticks as they are more hydrating
and have a better formula in general. However if you like lip stains but find them to be too messy
and drying on the lips then the Revlon products will be a godsend as they are one of if not the
most moisturising lip tints I have tested thus far and unlike liquid lip stains they apply evenly without any mess.
I do feel that the Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm Stains will do remarkably well when they launch
and will appeal to a whole range of people and not just those on a budget.
I hope this helps somewhat but if you have a specific question that I didn't address in this post
about how each compared to one and other feel free to let me know in the comment section :)
Ooh interesting post! When they eventually come out over here I'll definitely want to compare to ma Chubbies! x
ReplyDeleteOh yes please do :) i'd be interested in seeing what you think :)
DeleteI can't wait to try the Revlon lip stains! Thanks for this great review x
ReplyDeleteI hope you like them :)
Deletenot too fussed about the lip butters, but these balms look nice! x
ReplyDeleteI love the Lip butters but the stains not so much but try them out and let me know what you think :)
DeleteThe similarity in the packaging is incanny! They look identical! Prefer Clinique simply because they are the original! ;)
ReplyDelete*uncanny even.
DeleteI knew exactly what you meant and complete agree it is too close isn't it!
DeleteReally want to try the chubby sticks!

You should they are fab :)
DeleteI love Clinique but I hate the price tag. I tend to get staple products like moisturiser instead of products that are just a fancy. I love Revlon. It's my favourite highstreet beauty brand... by far! So I'll be buying the Just Bitten Lip Balm Stains!
ReplyDeleteThat is very sensible :) I hope you like the stains when they launch :)
Deletepretty sure i'll get one of these when they come out! they look really great.

I imagine they will be pretty successful :)
DeleteGreat post, I have been waiting for the revlon one's to come here already for a while now! Looking forward to trying them x
ReplyDeleteI hope you get your hands on them soon :)
DeleteI'm so excited about these, I love the Chubby Sticks but they're a tad too expensive for me to have all the colours I'd like so a cheaper version is great. I also got the Tarte LipSurgence Lip Stains when in America, which are basically the same thing, so I'm excited to compare all three. The Tarte ones are minty too so it seems like Revlon copied that from them! xx
ReplyDeleteHaha I know exactly what you mean, I wish I could afford to buy every shade of the chubby sticks too :( Oh yes please do that it would a wonderful read :)
DeleteI've swatched the Chubby Sticks countless times but I just can't bring myself to pay £16 for it haha. So, I suppose I'll be waiting for these Revlon resemblers to hit stores. I'll probably wear another lip balm underneath to try and counteract the dryness. Really useful post. Thank you! :) x
ReplyDeleteAh really? I'm obsessed with them but yes £16 aint cheap but then again i shouldn't say anything given that it's only £1 more than a standard Mac lippy...when did make-up get so expensive? That should work a treat :) I hope you like them I'm just not a fan of stains
DeleteI got a couple in the states on holiday last week - think they were $8.99 so I imagine they will be around the 8.99 mark here too. Undecided what I really think they are stains so most of the colours seem to have a pinkish / red leaning when the balm part has worn off.
ReplyDeleteI quite like a stain so would you recomend just getting a revlon over saving up for the clinique?

This is such a great post since i have been pondering which one to purchase eversince i have heard that Revlon are coming out with something very similar but for a fraction of the price. I really like the formula of the Clinique chubby sticks because they are very balm like with a suttle sheen :) I thought that the Revlon one was similar, but like you said, it is more like a stain rather than just a balm. I don't really need another stain really because there are so many out there and my personal favourite is Benefits Benetint which is amazing!! Thanks for sharing and i will be purchasing my Chubby sticks soon :)

Great review! I never got the Chubby Sticks, despite wanting them so much, but now I know I'll save up for them instead of jumping head first into the Revlon 'dupe' :)

Thanks for the comparison! I've been wondering how these compare :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comparisons! I don't know about you but over here in the states Clinique has been pushing the Chubby Sticks, thereby increasing sales of the Revlon stains (since they look so similar.) Glad to be informed of the differences.
ReplyDeletei actually thought these where the chubby sticks when i first saw them on here :P hhaa

Ha I just love the name chubby sticks! xx
ReplyDeleteThese really appeal to me. I didn't fancy the lip butters because I am a right messy pup, and very moisturising products just slip around on me! These balm stains look a lot better. Wish I could justify spending on a Chubby Stick....!

Great review and informative comparisson. I've made a sneaky order of the Revlon one off ebay. I've bought one of their UK Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm that's a double ended product and I really like that. I've reviewed it on my blog x

I have £16 worth of points on my Boots card but I'm not sure if the Chubby Sticks are worth it? How long does the colour last for?
ReplyDeleteThanks x

Thank you so so much for this post hun! Was wondering how these two compared. I've wanted to try Chubby Sticks for ages but never did because of the hefty price tag :/ May give the Revlon ones a whirl, even though they don't seem as moisturizing, the price is definitely a lot nicer ;)
