I don't know about you but when I pay close to £40 for something cosmetic based, I expect top notch quality not a poorly pigmented palette complete with a few loose eyeshadows. You used to be cool Urban Decay...what happened man? Rather than bitch about the palette I thought I'd weigh up the pros and cons of each variation, that way you can be the judge!
Packaging
Naked 2 wins hands down not only is it sturdy and pleasing on the eye but it protects the palette from everyday bumps and knocks. The thing I dislike most about the original Naked palette is after a while the flocking rubs off and the palette looks pitiful...well mine does anyway. If they do release a Naked 3 (which I bet they will) I hope it comes in a tin.
Extras
When the very first Naked palette came out it came with a duo ended eyeliner and an original primer potion, then they changed the newer batches from a eyeliner to a brush. In my opinion if it ain't broke don't fix it. Don't get me wrong the brush is not the worst I have ever encountered as far as palette brush goes it is actually pretty good but the eyeliner was a much better addition in terms of diversity.
Naked 2 has a similar brush (if not the same brush) and comes with a mini lipgloss. I'm not a massive fan of lipgloss particularly one that is neigh impossible to use thanks to the super stiff to squeeze tube, I understand the addition of the gloss...to offer a full look but I honestly believe that the primer would have been better in its place as the original suits all skin tones which we can't really say about the lipgloss can we? Perhaps primer is more expensive to make than gloss?
Colour Palette
Naked - A warm toned palette but does have a few cool shades.
Naked 2 - A cool toned palette yet has a few warm shades.
If you place the palettes side by side although one leans cooler than the other
they are not all that different, the both have warm and cool shades and the shades
don't differ all that much palette to palette.
Do you need both?
No, decide which one will better suit your skin tone and settle for that one.
Not that it really matters which one you choose as both have a selection of
cool and warm toned shades so you won't really loose out either way!
Pigmentation/Formula
In all of the swatch photos Naked 2 is the top row and Naked is on the bottom. |
This is what bothered me about Naked 2 the pigmentation really lacked compared to its counterpart.
I have swatched both side by side so you can draw your own comparisons
but I wasn't all that impressed particularly given it's price point, the lighter shades of Naked 2
have very little pigmentation which is disappointing.
The only pro so to speak I can think of about Naked 2 is that the shades seem less glittery/frosty.
The matte shades in Naked 2 are chalky and hard to swatch, which is not a problem I had with the original.
Did you get Naked again?
What are your thoughts?
I was very tempted to get the new one, having not got the old one. Not sure about the lack of pigmentation though. It does have all the colours you could ever need for a neutral look, but it is pricey if the pigmentation is not the same as the last one. Cool tin though, but will have to think about if to get this one.
ReplyDeleteIf I was you I'd wait until it hits the stores then go in and have a play around with it. That way you won't have spent £36 on something that you later dislike :) x
DeleteAs always you've presented a really useful and balanced review!
ReplyDeleteI have the original Naked palette and see no reason to purchase an "almost" replica. How much "brown" do I really need? :D xx
Thank you so much :)
DeleteI agree, I think the hype got to me...as per usual haha!
One neutral palette is more than enough eh? x
I don't own either of them, but they sure are tempting to me. If only may wallet would agree with me. Maybe I am subconsciously sort of holding out hoping Naked 3 will be all matte/silky finishes... Or the point were people will get sick of their Naked palettes and sell them dirt cheap on blog sales ;) LOL.
ReplyDeleteBTW: I just read on FB that more people had problems with loose eye shadows in their palette, they reported it to UD customer service and got a replacement quickly. It must be some quality control mistake.
haha very smart thinking indeed ;)
Deletei'm sure these and the earlier version will spring up on blogsales oh so soon!
I bet they will make a Naked 3 by this time next year...be funny if I was right haha!
Oh I wish I knew that before I swatched mine :( oh well x
I would write to them about it all the same, you'll never know what the response will be, and at worst you would have wasted a bit of your time. Especially if it is a known problem with the new palettes, they shouldn't make too much of a fuzz about it. I mean: which make-up lover can resist the temptation to at least try the shades right away!
DeleteAgreed :) I will call them tomorrow and see what they say! Thank you :) x
DeleteI used my Naked 2 today and I am feeling a bit disappointed.. I really want to be excited about it but the lack of pigmentation has really put a downer on this! £36 for poorly pigmented shades is not what I had in mind :( X
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more for £36 I honestly expected it to blow me away x
DeleteI do think the two palette are too simiular to warrant buying both which is annoying rele as the makeup junkie in me wants to get both even though I dont really need both.
ReplyDeleteI am doing an international giveaway on the naked 2 palette incase interested xxx
http://miss-lv.blogspot.com/
I agree it is very hard to resist something so new and hyped. I think the reason I bought Naked 2 was due to the original being so great but this one falls flat.
DeleteAh thank you for the heads up but one is more than enough for me haha! x
I was going to get Naked 2 but I think I'm just going to stick with my good old Naked Original! Like you said, the pigmentation is better in naked 1 and I think I like the colours better so I'd really just be buying it for the sake of having it. Thanks for honest review. I think your one of the only ones who have admitted there is no need to have both
ReplyDeletex
Most welcome :) if you love Naked 1 you really don't need this at all and i'm really guilty of having things just for the sake of it which is never a good thing is it haha! x
Deleteohhh great review. i bet if you replaced some of the naked 2 shades, you would have a complete near double of the naked palette. having them all jumbled up does make the two palette look different, when in reality the shades are all really similar.
ReplyDeleteso annoying that its not as pigmented.. everytime i see a naked 2 review im reminded of how much i love my original naked palette!
I completley agree, it's clever shade placement but if you look closely they are not all that dissimilar which is annoying.
DeleteUse your naked 1 palette and use the money you would have spent on it, on something nice :) x
i think it would be good to have both for my kit as there are warm and cool tones xD i already have the first.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty I think you'd be better will cool toned Inglot or Mac shadows than this palette as you will be using it for pro reasons I think you'd be really disappointed in the colour pay off :) x
Deletei think this is the most honest review i have read so far about Naked 2. thumbs up girl !!
ReplyDeletede-jeeya.blogspot.com
thank you jeeya :) x
DeleteIt looks amazing, but I am not sure if I will get it, I have naked original, so I will think abou it! thanks for the review
ReplyDeletewise move :) x
DeleteYou can really see the difference between the two in the swatches! I wouldn't buy either though as I would never use half the shades in the box!
ReplyDeletehttp://helloterrilowe.blogspot.com
I'm glad the difference comes across :) yeah i'm really guilty of that myself some of my original naked shades have only been swatched and that is it haha...ooopsy x
DeleteI much much much prefer the original palette! xx
ReplyDeleteAgreed! :) x
DeleteThanks for this awesome post hun :) (though I bloomin love ALL your fab posts! Haha!) I never got the palette 1st time round so deciding whether to get a NAKED palette, but the question is which one?! Looking at the swatches I'm thinking the original one would suit my skintone more... :)
ReplyDeleteLove Aysh xox
Your most welcome and thank you so much :)!! I would say the orginial as it is better formulated and I think all those warm shades would look amazing on you! x
DeleteSuch a good review huni.. I've been so tempted with the recent hype.. But I don't really use shadows other than a base and this has calmed my eagerness right down.. Thank you xxx
ReplyDeleteAww thank you :) and you are so welcome :) put the money that you would have spent on this towards something that you'll truly love and use :) x
DeleteThey keep raising the prices and the quality decreases. What is wrong with urban decay?
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly...so odd with a price increase I expect high quality don't you? x
DeleteDissapointing and I wanted it sooo much, good that u say ( Andrea Vd Wall Anrmeman at fB
ReplyDeletethank you maria, I can't help but be honest and i'm sorry it has put you off a little :( x
Deletetrue I appresiate it :(
Deletemost welcome :)
DeleteI chose not to be naked twice, I didn't really see the point in owning two that were so similar. If they do release a naked three it'll just be overkill
ReplyDeletexx
I'm honestly shocked at how similar they are, I wanted them to be worlds apart but nope. I agree but I'd bet my ass on it that they will x
DeleteI have both palettes, and I even though I'm trying to be happy with Naked 2, in all honesty I'm not. They could have made it so much better! Pigimentation is definitely poor compared to Naked. I say buy it if you want to splurge, but when comparing it to Naked, Naked wins hands.down.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything in this post.
iBlogMakeup.blogspot.com
That's how I feel, I want to love it but I don't :( I agree it could have been so much more amazing couldn't it have?
DeleteAww thank you :) x
I don't have either but I prefer the first one. I'm hoping it will be reduced soon so I can grab one. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure some will go in blog sales super soon :) x
DeleteGreat review! I purchased one in the spare of the moment when Debenhams had their midnight sale of them but haven't opened it as I don't think I'll keep it! Have the first one which I love so much so I really don't think I need the second one, £36 which could go towards something else! :-) xx
ReplyDeletewww.jessicabeautician.com
I did that haha I got caught up in the hype and I think i'll give mine away to a family member or someone like that. Agreed the £36 could be so much better spent :) x
DeleteI don't have either of them but have wanted one for a while, but I have so many neutral shades and have a whole 34 shade neutral palette from ebay which is great quality. I'd still be tempted but I do think they are other products out there that are essentially the same thing.
ReplyDelete-x
http://makeupmeow.blogspot.com
Agreed the temptation does get to you but stick with your big neutral palette you already have :) x
DeleteCheck out my VISUAL Side by Side comparison of the 2 palettes. Could also help you decide!~
ReplyDeletehttp://wp.me/p1DFOc-qt
Thanks so much for this - the only entry that has really helped me! I don't need Naked 2, I like Naked 1 :)))
ReplyDeleteyou are more than welcome :) x
DeleteHum.. I have to agree with you. I probably don't need this given the poorer pigmentation (you know how important that is to me.) While I think N2 would be more complimentary to my skintone and dislike of shimmer...what's the point if it's too much work to get it to show?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you the cool tone would look beautiful on your skin tone but I also know how paramount pigmentation is to you and this falls way short of the mark. I really doubt you would get many of the shades to show on you :( x
DeleteI don't have either, but I'd probably opt for the first Naked. I think they switched from eyeliner to brush because the eyeliners are made in Germany (as a good many cosmetic companies' eyeliners are... not made by them but rather outsourced in Germany, sometimes other countries). The palette kept selling out quickly and was taking too long to make with the eyeliner, so they switched. That's what a friend told me!
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather the mini UDPP over the gloss. I love gloss but I have tons already, and I always use primer when wearing eyeshadow.
Ah that clarify's the liner to brush fiasco thank you :) I agree I would have much preferred a mini UDPP over another gloss as like you said you'd reach for that so much more! x
DeleteThis is bar far the best comparison post I've seen! It helped me understand why I wanted to buy Naked 2 even though I didn't like Naked 1 and ended up selling it! I've linked your post on my blog post about Naked 2, hope you don't mind xx
ReplyDeleteThanks chica :) and of course I don't thank you for linking me :) x
DeleteI have the first on and although id love the second one i dont really need that many neutral shades! Great comparison, i really dont like the addition of the lipgloss, doesnt seem to fit in to me.
ReplyDeletehttp://zozeze.blogspot.com/
xo
I agree the lipgloss is not required at all :) good for you for resisting :) x
DeleteNaked #1 for ever :)
ReplyDeletefor sure :)
DeleteI have just ordered mine but the colours do look very similar . . . and after what I have read on it I am a little nervous about it . Either way we still have the 1st Naked to rely on and I am still super excited !
